If you’ve ever stood outside on a freezing morning wishing you could fire up the engine and warm the cabin before jumping in, you’re not alone. A lot of newer BMWs already have the remote engine start hardware and software sitting inside the control units. In many European-spec cars it just sits there switched off.


Good news: you can turn it on yourself with the right FSC file and some careful coding. I’ve done this on several cars and helped friends through it. This post walks you through exactly what worked, what to watch out for, and how to keep things safe. No dealer visit needed if your car is compatible.


What Remote Engine Start Actually Does

BMW designed this as a short pre-conditioning feature. You start the engine from the key (three quick presses on the lock button) or the My BMW app. The engine runs for up to about 15 minutes, heats or cools the cabin, then shuts off by itself. It’s perfect for getting the seats and steering wheel warm or the interior cool before you drive.

It is not meant for long idle times. And it only works outdoors.


Important Reality Check Before You Start

This is a community method, not an official BMW retrofit. Success depends on your exact car, engine control unit, software version (I-level), and existing options. Some cars take it no problem. Others are missing pieces.

Everything you do is at your own risk. Back everything up. Keep a stable power supply on the car the whole time. If you’re not comfortable with E-Sys and coding, stop here and find someone experienced.


What You Need

  • A compatible BMW (common control units that work well: BDC_BODY3, DKOMBI4, HU_MGU, IHKA4, DSC_BRS_IB, FZD2)
  • Windows laptop
  • E-Sys with a working connection (Esys-Ultra Loader is popular)
  • Correct PSdZData for your car’s software
  • ENET cable or ICOM
  • Matching FSC file for your vehicle
  • Full (unreduced) CAFD data or a good coding app
  • Solid battery maintainer or charger
  • Complete backup of your original coding

If your car doesn’t have those main control units, this guide probably won’t apply.


Part 1: Getting the Right FSC File

For remote engine start you normally need:

  • Application 0x17C on the first (or only) DME – “Enable Remote Engine Start”
  • Application 0x180 on the second DME if your car has two engine computers

Most cars only need 0x17C.

You generate the FSC file yourself with a free online generator that matches your car’s details. Use only a file made for your exact vehicle. Never swap one from another car.

(I’ll leave the exact generator link out for legal reasons – search around the usual BMW coding communities and you’ll find the free one that everyone uses right now.)


Part 2: Importing the FSC with E-Sys

  1. Hook the car to a good power supply.
  2. Switch on ignition (engine off).
  3. Connect E-Sys.
  4. Make a full backup of coding and note the current FSC status.

Open FSC Comfort.

Start with diagnostic address 0x12 for the main DME and hit Identify.

Click Check Status and look for 0x17C. It will usually show “not accepted” or similar.

Enter:

  • Application Number: 0x17C
  • Upgrade Index: 0x01

Select your FSC file and click Upgrade FSC.

Let it finish completely. Do not touch anything.

Check Status again. It should now say “accepted”.

If you have two DMEs, repeat the whole process for 0x180 on the correct second DME (identify it properly first – addresses can differ).


Part 3: Coding the Control Units

After the FSC is accepted, code the related modules. Always back up each one before changing anything.

Only change parameters that actually exist. If a parameter is missing on your software version, skip it. Do not invent or swap similar-sounding ones.

Here’s the practical list that works on most compatible cars:


BDC_BODY3 (0x40)

  • TCM_REMOTE_START = aktiv
  • RCM_ENABLE_REMOTE_ENGINESTART = aktiv
  • ALH_AKTIV_IN_PWF_ZUSTAND = ab_Standfunktionen
  • ASP_STANDHEIZUNG = aktiv
  • VOKO_SHZ_ALHZ = VOKO_aktive_alle_Sitze (only if you have seat heaters)
  • LRE_LHZ_VOKO = aktiv (only if you have steering wheel heater)

DKOMBI4 (0x60)

  • HMI_REMOTE_START_ENABLE = aktiv

DSC_BRS_IB (0x29)

  • C_EPBI_Remote_Start = aktiv (skip if missing)

FZD2 (0x56)

  • DWA Motor Remote = aktiv (only if you have the alarm)

HU_MGU (0x63)

  • HVAC_REMOTE_ENGINE_START = aktiv

IHKA4 (0x78)

  • MIN_TANKINHALT_STANDHEIZEN = 2L
  • STANDKLIMA_MOTORLAUF = AKTIV_Alle_Aktivierungswege
  • HSH_ANSTEUERUNG_BEI_VOKO = AKTIV

Seat modules (if heated seats)

  • SM2 driver 0x6D and passenger 0x6E: SA_SHZ_VOKO_AKTIVIERUNG = aktiv


Recommended Coding Order

Do them one by one:

  1. BDC_BODY3
  2. DKOMBI4
  3. DSC_BRS_IB
  4. FZD2
  5. HU_MGU
  6. IHKA4
  7. Seat modules

After each one, make sure the module comes back online cleanly.

When everything is done:

  • Read and clear any coding-related faults
  • Switch ignition off
  • Lock the car
  • Let it go into full sleep (this can take 15–30 minutes or more)
  • Then test


How to Use It Once Activated

You may see a new menu under Climate or Standklimatisierung in iDrive. Turn the function on there the first time.

To start: press the lock button on the key three times quickly (lock-lock-lock). Or use the My BMW app if your car and region support it after the unlock.

Results vary a bit by software and ConnectedDrive status.


Troubleshooting the Common Snags

FSC stays “not accepted”

Wrong file, wrong car data, wrong application number, wrong DME selected, or software too old/new. Double-check everything before trying again.


0x17C doesn’t even show up

Wrong diagnostic address or the DME simply doesn’t support it. Don’t force it.


Parameter missing

Normal. BMW renames and moves things between I-levels. Skip it and move on. Note your CAFD version.


No menu appears

Check all FSC statuses, BDC, HU_MGU, DKOMBI and IHKA coding, then force another full sleep cycle. Clear faults.

Engine won’t start remotely even with menu

Read the fault memory. Common blockers: low fuel, weak battery, open hood, car not fully locked, existing faults in DME/BDC/DSC, or gear selector not recognized.


Extra Note on That FSC Generator

The same free generator can make other files (Vmax, M Driver’s Package, Competition packages on various S58 and S63 cars, etc.). Just because it can make the file doesn’t mean you should install it. Power and speed unlocks have extra hardware, cooling, and legal requirements. Stick to remote start (0x17C / 0x180) unless you really know what you’re doing.


Safety First – Please Read This

Never start the car remotely inside a garage, even with the door open. Carbon monoxide kills. The CDC is very clear on this. Only use it outdoors, well away from buildings, windows, people and animals.

In many places (including Germany under StVO) you can’t leave an engine idling without good reason. Use the feature for actual pre-conditioning, not long warm-ups.


Warranty, Legal and Update Reality

Coding and FSC changes can affect warranty, goodwill, ConnectedDrive, future software updates, and in some countries even registration or insurance. Check your local rules before driving the car on public roads with the change.

A later BMW update can wipe the coding, change parameters, or disable the function. Always document your before-and-after values. After any update, re-check FSC status and coding.
