Here’s the straightforward process that works every time:
- Install the new spark plugs correctly
- Remove the old ones one by one (or carefully label them if you prefer). Gap the new plugs if required (most modern iridium/platinum are pre-gapped—double-check the manual). Install by hand first to avoid cross-threading, then torque to the exact specification for your engine. Reinstall coils and connectors firmly.
- Connect your interface and open ISTA
- Plug in your OBD interface, turn the ignition on (engine off is usually fine), and launch the software. Make sure you have a solid connection and the car is recognized.
- Navigate to the Spark plugs section
- Go to the engine control unit / DME functions. Look for the menu point clearly labeled “Spark plugs”. It’s usually under service functions, adaptations, or component protection / registration menus depending on your exact software version.
- Start the registration
- Select the spark plug replacement / registration option. The software will prompt you. Confirm that you have actually replaced the plugs.
- Mileage gets saved automatically
- This is the key part: the vehicle’s current mileage is read and stored during registration. Don’t skip or interrupt this. Let the process finish completely. You’ll usually get a confirmation message that registration was successful.
- Clear any related codes and test
- Clear fault codes if any appeared. Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. Take a short drive and check that everything feels normal—no misfires, smooth throttle response.
That’s it. You’ve just told the ECU “hey, fresh plugs at this mileage” and the component protection function is happy.
Real-World Tips from Someone Who Does This Regularly
- Always register right after installation, before you drive much. The sooner the better.
- Keep a note of the mileage and date you did the job. Handy for future reference.
- If ISTA gives you any error, double-check battery voltage and connection quality first. Low voltage kills more programming sessions than anything else.
- Some engines may also benefit from a short adaptation drive cycle afterward so the ECU fine-tunes itself to the new plugs.
- Using genuine or high-quality plugs makes the whole registration process more meaningful—cheap no-name plugs can still cause issues even if registered.
