Nissan Qashqai Transmission Control Module DTCs Fix (C1BD5-16, C1BD5-1C, U0100-00, U0101-00)

Transmission problems on a Nissan Qashqai can appear suddenly. One moment the vehicle is driving normally, and the next it may hesitate, refuse to change gear or enter limp mode. When a diagnostic scan shows codes such as C1BD5-16, C1BD5-1C, U0100-00 or U0101-00, the fault is not always inside the gearbox itself.

In many cases, the real problem is electrical. A weak battery, unstable alternator output, damaged wiring or a poor ground connection can interrupt communication with the Transmission Control Module, commonly called the TCM.

The TCM controls important transmission functions, including gear selection, shift timing, clutch operation and pressure control. If it loses a reliable power supply or cannot communicate with the engine computer, the Qashqai may protect itself by limiting available gears.

This guide explains what each code means, the symptoms to look for and the checks that should be completed before replacing expensive parts.

Important: Always use the correct service information for the exact Qashqai engine, transmission and model year. Voltage readings and connector locations can vary between versions.

Common Symptoms of Nissan Qashqai TCM Fault Codes

The following symptoms may appear when the TCM has a power or communication problem:

  • Harsh or delayed gear changes
  • Transmission stuck in one gear
  • Vehicle entering limp-home mode
  • Difficulty selecting Drive or Reverse
  • Transmission warning light illuminated
  • Check Engine light appearing
  • Engine stalling or poor running
  • Intermittent loss of transmission operation
  • No communication with the TCM during a diagnostic scan
  • Multiple unrelated warning lights appearing together

The presence of several warning lights at once is an important clue. Modern Nissan vehicles use several control modules that communicate over the CAN network. If the vehicle voltage drops or a communication circuit is interrupted, several systems may report faults at the same time.

C1BD5-16: Power Supply Voltage Low

What does C1BD5-16 mean?

The code C1BD5-16 indicates that the TCM has detected a power supply voltage lower than the expected level. The transmission computer needs a stable electrical supply to operate its internal circuits and control the gearbox correctly.

If the voltage drops too far during starting or while driving, the TCM may reset, stop communicating or record additional fault codes.

Common symptoms

A Qashqai with this fault may experience:

  • Delayed gear engagement
  • Hard or unusual shifting
  • Transmission warning light
  • Limp mode
  • Intermittent loss of communication
  • Several control-module codes after a weak start
  • Problems that disappear after the vehicle is restarted

The fault may be worse in cold weather because a weak battery loses more power when temperatures fall.

Likely causes

The most common causes include:

  1. Weak or failing battery
  2. Loose battery terminals
  3. Corrosion around the battery connections
  4. Poor engine or body ground
  5. Faulty alternator
  6. Damaged wiring to the TCM
  7. Blown or loose fuse
  8. Water entering a connector
  9. Voltage drop during engine cranking

How to diagnose C1BD5-16

Begin with a visual inspection. Check the battery terminals and make sure they are clean, tight and free from white or green corrosion. A terminal can look connected but still create a voltage drop under load.

Measure the battery voltage with the engine switched off. A fully charged battery will normally show approximately 12.4 to 12.7 volts, although the correct specification should be confirmed for the vehicle.

Next, start the engine and check the charging voltage. The alternator should provide a stable output, usually around the mid-13 to mid-14-volt range on many vehicles. Do not rely on a single reading alone. Watch the voltage with the headlights, heater blower and rear demister switched on.

A battery load test is also useful. A battery can show an acceptable voltage at rest but fail when the starter motor demands high current.

If the battery and alternator pass testing, check the TCM power and ground circuits. Voltage should be measured at the module connector, not only at the battery. This helps identify a damaged cable, poor fuse connection or corroded ground point.

C1BD5-1C: Power Supply Voltage Out of Range

What does C1BD5-1C mean?

The code C1BD5-1C means the TCM has detected a power supply voltage outside its permitted range. The voltage may be too low, too high or unstable.

This code is slightly different from a simple low-voltage fault because it can also point to charging-system problems. An alternator with a faulty regulator may produce voltage spikes that disturb the TCM and other electronic modules.

Symptoms to watch for

Typical symptoms include:

  • Erratic transmission operation
  • Harsh or delayed shifts
  • Warning lights on the instrument panel
  • Gear selection problems
  • Intermittent limp mode
  • Transmission faults after jump-starting
  • Electrical accessories behaving unusually

If the fault appears after replacing the battery or alternator, check that the correct component has been fitted and that all connections have been tightened properly.

Possible causes

C1BD5-1C may be caused by:

  • Damaged TCM wiring
  • Loose power or ground connection
  • Alternator overcharging
  • Faulty voltage regulator
  • Incorrect battery type or poor battery condition
  • Water or corrosion inside a connector
  • A failing TCM
  • A short circuit in the power supply

Recommended repair process

Inspect the wiring harness leading to the TCM. Look for crushed sections, melted insulation, exposed copper or areas where the harness may be rubbing against a bracket.

Examine the connectors carefully. A connector does not need to be visibly broken to create a problem. Slightly spread terminals, moisture or oxidation can increase resistance and interrupt the power supply.

Use a multimeter to check for voltage stability with the engine idling and under electrical load. If the reading rises excessively or changes sharply, test the alternator and voltage regulator before condemning the TCM.

It is also important to check voltage drop. Place the multimeter leads between the battery positive terminal and the TCM power feed, then repeat the test on the ground side. Excessive voltage drop indicates resistance in the wiring, fuse box, ground cable or connection.

Do not replace the TCM until the battery, alternator, fuses, wiring and grounds have been tested. A new module may develop the same fault if the original electrical problem remains.

U0100-00: Lost Communication with ECM/PCM

What does U0100-00 mean?

The code U0100-00 indicates a loss of communication between the TCM and the Engine Control Module or Powertrain Control Module. These computers exchange information through the vehicle’s CAN communication network.

The engine computer supplies and receives important data related to engine speed, torque request, throttle position and vehicle operating conditions. The TCM uses this information to select the correct gear and manage shift quality.

When communication is lost, the transmission may use a backup strategy or remain in a limited gear.

Common symptoms

The Qashqai may show:

  • Transmission stuck in one gear
  • Failure to select Drive or Reverse
  • Limp mode
  • Engine hesitation or stalling
  • Check Engine and transmission warning lights
  • No communication with one or more modules
  • Fault codes that return immediately after clearing

Main causes

The most likely causes are:

  • Open or shorted CAN wiring
  • Damaged wiring between the ECM and TCM
  • Poor power or ground connection
  • Faulty ECM

  • Water damage inside a module connector
  • Low battery voltage
  • A different module interfering with the CAN network

A low battery can sometimes create U0100-00 even when both control modules are working correctly. This is why power supply checks should come before replacing electronic modules.

How to check the fault

First, scan every available control module rather than looking only at the transmission system. Check which modules communicate and which ones are missing from the scan.

If the TCM cannot be accessed but the ECM can, inspect the TCM power, ground and communication circuits. If both modules are unavailable, investigate the CAN network and shared power supplies.

Inspect the CAN wiring for damage, especially near the battery, fuse box, gearbox and areas exposed to water or heat. Never probe terminals carelessly with oversized test leads, as this can damage delicate connector contacts.

A professional scan tool and wiring diagram may be required to test CAN resistance and signal activity correctly. CAN faults can be difficult to find because the wiring may look perfect from the outside.

U0101-00: Lost Communication with the TCM

What does U0101-00 mean?

The code U0101-00 means that another control module has lost communication with the TCM. This code does not automatically prove that the TCM itself has failed.

The issue may be caused by a power supply problem, a damaged CAN circuit, poor grounding or a fault inside the TCM.

Symptoms

Possible symptoms include:

  • Vehicle stuck in one gear
  • Transmission refusing to shift
  • No Drive or Reverse engagement
  • Transmission warning light
  • Limp-home mode
  • Gear position display behaving incorrectly
  • Multiple communication codes

Common causes

Check for:

  • Loose TCM connector
  • Corroded connector pins
  • Damaged harness
  • TCM power fuse failure
  • Poor ground connection
  • Low battery voltage
  • CAN high or CAN low circuit fault
  • Internal TCM failure
  • Water contamination

Repair steps

Begin by checking the TCM connector and surrounding wiring. Look for moisture, bent pins, pushed-back terminals and signs of previous repairs.

Confirm that the TCM has the correct power supply with the ignition switched on and during engine cranking. A circuit may show power with no load but fail when the module is operating.

Next, check the module grounds. A ground connection can appear visually clean but still have high resistance. Carry out a voltage-drop test while the circuit is loaded.

If the TCM has correct power and ground but remains unavailable to the scan tool, test the CAN network. At this stage, a qualified technician may need to isolate modules one at a time to identify which device is disrupting communication.

Only after these checks should TCM replacement be considered.

A Reliable Nissan Qashqai TCM Diagnostic Order

Following the correct order can save time and prevent unnecessary parts replacement.

1. Record all fault codes

Save the complete scan report before clearing anything. Note whether the codes are current, pending or stored.

2. Check battery condition

Test battery voltage, cranking performance and charging output. Clear low-voltage issues first.

3. Inspect fuses and grounds

Check TCM, ECM and transmission-related fuses. Inspect the main battery, engine and body grounds.

4. Examine connectors and wiring

Look for corrosion, loose terminals, water entry, damaged insulation and previous repair work.

5. Check TCM power and ground

Test voltage directly at the TCM connector using the correct wiring diagram.

6. Check CAN communication

If power and ground are correct, test the CAN network with suitable diagnostic equipment.

7. Clear codes and road-test

After repairs, clear the codes and perform a careful road test. Monitor live data and confirm that gear changes are normal.

8. Program or replace the TCM when necessary

If the module is confirmed faulty, it may need programming, configuration or replacement by a Nissan specialist. Installing a replacement module without the required setup may leave the vehicle unable to communicate correctly.

Can You Drive With These Fault Codes?

It is best to avoid unnecessary driving when the Qashqai is stuck in limp mode, refusing to shift or showing severe transmission symptoms. Continuing to drive may place extra stress on the transmission and could leave you stranded.

A short drive to a repair shop may be reasonable if the vehicle shifts normally and the warning light is not flashing. However, do not drive if there is no Drive or Reverse, the vehicle is slipping badly, the transmission is overheating or the
