The McLaren MP4-12C is a remarkable car, but even a supercar can switch on the check-engine light. When that happens, the diagnostic trouble code is only the starting point—not the final answer.

A sensor may appear faulty when the real issue is a damaged harness or unstable power supply. That is why live data and a physical wiring inspection matter.
P0491: Secondary Air Injection Insufficient Flow, Bank 1
P0491 relates to insufficient airflow in the secondary air-injection system. The system helps reduce emissions during cold starts.
Possible causes include:
- Weak secondary-air pump
- Blocked air passage
- Leaking hose
- Faulty check valve
- Electrical fault
- Carbon buildup in the injection passage
This code may appear without a major drivability problem. However, the check-engine light can return after the vehicle completes its emissions self-test. A technician should test the pump command, airflow, valves and hoses rather than simply clearing the code.
P0C8A00: Check the Vehicle Application First
The code description supplied by some scan tools refers to a hybrid or electric-vehicle battery cooling-fan control circuit. That description deserves caution on a standard McLaren MP4-12C, which is not a hybrid model.
This may indicate:
- A scan-tool database error
- A code translated from the wrong vehicle profile
- A manufacturer-specific code
- A communication or module-identification issue
