A BMW lamp that suddenly stops working may not have a failed bulb. On many F-models and newer BMW vehicles, the lighting module can shut down an output after detecting a short circuit.


This protection helps prevent damage to the wiring and control unit. However, replacing the bulb or repairing the wiring does not always restore the light automatically. The affected output may remain locked until the short-circuit counter or shutdown status is reset.


ISTA can perform this function on many vehicles, but some ISTA versions have caused problems with this particular procedure. For that reason, BMW specialists often use Tool32 with the correct PRG file.


Important Safety Check Before Resetting

Do not reset the lamp output before finding the original fault. Check the following first:

  • Damaged or melted wiring
  • Water inside the headlamp
  • Corroded connectors
  • Incorrect LED bulbs
  • Faulty ballast or LED driver
  • Loose grounds
  • Aftermarket lighting equipment
  • A damaged headlight control module

A reset will not repair a real short circuit. If the fault is still present, the module may shut down the same output again.

Use a stable battery charger during diagnostics. Low voltage can interrupt communication and create additional faults.


Tool32 Jobs for BMW F-Models

The correct job depends on the body electronics module installed in the vehicle.

BDC.PRG

Use the following job:

control_reset_shortcircuit shutdown


FEM_20.PRG

Use the following job:

control_reset_shortcircuit shutdown

These files are commonly associated with BMW F-series body electronics systems. Always confirm the correct PRG file for the vehicle before sending a command.


Common Lamp Output Codes

The lamp number is entered as a hexadecimal value. Common outputs include:

The exact list can vary between PRG files and module versions. Some vehicles use different names for the same physical lamp, so always compare the Tool32 description with the fault memory and wiring diagram.


Resetting the Output

After connecting to the vehicle:

  1. Open Tool32.
  2. Load the correct PRG file, such as BDC.PRG or FEM_20.PRG.
  3. Select control_reset_shortcircuit shutdown.
  4. Enter the correct lamp output value.
  5. Run the job once.
  6. Clear the related fault memory.
  7. Switch the ignition off and allow the vehicle to enter sleep mode.
  8. Test the repaired lamp again.

For testing, 0xFE may reset all outputs on supported modules. This should be used carefully because it can affect every protected lamp circuit.


Newer BDC and G05/G11 Modules

Some newer BMW platforms use different jobs for the short-circuit counter. For example:

  • BDC_G05.PRG
  • Job: _steuern_licht_kurzschlusscounter_abs
  • BDC_G11.PRG
  • Job: _steuern_kurzschlusscounter_abs

These files may include output values such as low beam, high beam, daytime running lights, turn signals, brake lights, rear fog lights, license plate lights, grille lighting, and interior LED functions.


The correct output list depends on the module software and vehicle platform. Do not assume that a code from a FEM vehicle will match a G-series BDC vehicle.


What About SP2021 and BCP Vehicles?

BMW vehicles using the Basis Central Platform from SP2021 may use BCP_SP21.PRG. At the time of writing, the reset job information for this platform may not be available in every Tool32 setup.


The lighting positions are generally numbered from the left low beam through rear lighting functions. These can include:

  • Low and high beams
  • Daytime running lights
  • Front turn signals
  • Fog lights
  • Illuminated kidney grille
  • Door handle lighting
  • Tail lights
  • Brake lights
  • Rear turn signals
  • Reverse lights
  • License plate lighting

Because BCP software is different from older FEM and BDC systems, use the correct factory documentation and diagnostic information before attempting any command.
