Coding Alpina Sport software to a compatible BMW 8HP70 automatic transmission can improve shift speed, gear changes and overall transmission response. The process uses BMW E-Sys to update the EGS transmission control unit with the correct Alpina software.
This is not a simple plug-and-play modification. The vehicle must meet the required production date, type code, I-Level and transmission specifications before flashing begins.
A stable power supply is also essential. Always connect a quality battery charger before reading, coding or flashing any BMW control module.
What You Need
Before starting, prepare the following equipment:
- BMW E-Sys 3.33 or newer
- The latest PSdZData Full Edition
- A reliable ENET cable
- BMW battery charger or power supply
- ISTA-D or Rheingold for clearing EGS faults
- A compatible BMW with the ZF 8HP70 transmission
- Correct vehicle FA and type code information
The full PSdZData package can be very large, so make sure your computer has enough storage space before beginning.
Important Compatibility Requirements
The vehicle should have a production date of 1211 or later and an I-Level of 11-09-507 or newer.
Common type keys include:
- XA71 for BMW F10 and F06 applications
- 3E51 for BMW F30 applications
Always confirm the exact vehicle configuration before changing the FA or flashing the EGS. Incorrect vehicle data can cause coding problems or make the control unit unusable.
The EGS software must also match the transmission hardware. The ZF 8HP family includes several versions with different torque capacities:

Do not install software intended for a different transmission family.
Adding the Required VO Codes
Depending on the vehicle and conversion, the following equipment codes may be used:
- 931 – Winter tires instead of summer tires from the factory
- 920 – Alpina without registration document
- 9XA – Alpina package
After adding the required equipment code, the new FA must be checked before it is written to the vehicle.
In E-Sys:
- Right-click the FA file.
- Select Calculate FP.
- Check for errors.
- Save the updated FA.
E-Sys may display an error if an invalid FA entry has been added. Check every code carefully before continuing.
EGS Flashing Procedure
Start E-Sys in Comfort Mode and connect to the vehicle.
1. Read and Save the Vehicle FA
Click Read to load the vehicle order. Select the FA folder and save a backup file, such as:
Keeping the original FA is important in case the vehicle needs to be returned to its previous configuration.
2. Read the Vehicle ECU Data
Click Read ECU on the right side of E-Sys.
Under SVTL_SOLL, select the correct build I-Level and target I-Level. Choose Total Flash, then click Calculate and save the result:
Below the SVT section, click Calculate under TAL and save the TAL file:
3. Switch to Expert Mode
Open TAL Processing and load the saved TAL file:
Under SVT Target, select:
Under FA, click Read VCM and then clear all selected options.
For the EGS module, select only:
- blFLASH
- swDEPLOY
- cdDEPLOY
Do not select unrelated control units. Flashing unnecessary modules increases risk and adds extra time to the procedure.
Click Start and confirm the operation.
The EGS update may take approximately three minutes, although the exact time depends on the vehicle, laptop and connection quality.
Clear EGS Fault Codes
After flashing is complete, connect to the vehicle with ISTA-D/Rheingold.
Read the vehicle fault memory and delete any EGS-related errors. Some temporary communication faults can appear after programming and may disappear after the ignition is cycled.
After clearing the faults, switch the ignition off, wait several minutes and restart the vehicle. Check that the transmission selects all gears normally and that no warning lights remain on the dashboard.
Final Checks
Before driving normally, confirm:
- No transmission warning is displayed
- The EGS has no active fault codes
- The vehicle enters Drive and Reverse correctly
- Gear changes are smooth
- The battery voltage remained stable during flashing
- The transmission fluid level and condition are correct
A short, gentle test drive is recommended. Avoid hard acceleration until the transmission has completed its adaptation process.
Important Safety Note
Alpina Sport software can change shift strategy, throttle response and transmission behavior. It should only be installed on a compatible vehicle with suitable transmission hardware.
BMW E-Sys flashing carries a genuine risk of communication failure or control-unit damage. Use a stable power supply, save the original FA and confirm every software selection before pressing Start.
