BMW has steadily expanded its driver assistance technology, and Traffic Light Recognition is one of the most interesting features available on selected models. It works with Active Cruise Control, Speed Limit Assist and the KAFAS camera system to help the vehicle respond to traffic lights more intelligently.
The feature is designed to support the driver when approaching a red light. Depending on the selected settings and road conditions, the system may suggest braking or automatically accept a braking request. It can also provide a reminder when the traffic light turns green and the driver does not move away.
This is not an autonomous driving feature. The driver remains responsible for observing the road, understanding traffic signals and controlling the vehicle at all times.
What Is BMW Traffic Light Recognition?
BMW Traffic Light Recognition uses the forward-facing KAFAS camera to identify traffic lights and determine their current status. When the system detects a red signal, it can calculate whether the vehicle should slow down and stop before the defined stopping point.
The feature extends the function of BMW’s existing driver assistance systems, particularly:
- Active Cruise Control, commonly known as ACC
- Speed Limit Assist
- Traffic sign and signal recognition
- Driver attention monitoring
- Front collision and warning systems
Unlike a basic traffic sign display, Traffic Light Recognition can influence longitudinal vehicle control. In simple terms, the car is not only showing the driver that a red light has been detected; it may also help manage the vehicle’s speed as the intersection approaches.
The system is generally available at speeds below approximately 85 km/h, provided all other operating conditions are met.
How Red-Light Braking Works
BMW offers two approaches for red-light braking:
- Manual acceptance of the braking suggestion
- Automatic acceptance of the braking suggestion
The selected mode affects how much confirmation the driver must provide before braking begins.
Manual Acceptance
In manual mode, the system first detects the red traffic light and presents a braking suggestion to the driver. A traffic-light symbol and a {SET} message appear in the instrument cluster and, where equipped, the Head-Up Display.
To accept the braking suggestion, the driver presses the {SET} button on the multifunction steering wheel.
After confirmation:
- The {SET} message changes to a green check mark.
- Braking begins immediately.
- The vehicle continues braking toward the defined stopping point.
- The system aims to use comfortable deceleration where possible.
If the driver does not confirm the suggestion before the final possible braking point, the request disappears and the braking suggestion is rejected.
This setup gives the driver a clear decision at the moment the system identifies the red light. It is especially useful for drivers who prefer to keep more direct control over assistance functions.
Automatic Acceptance
In automatic mode, BMW may accept the red-light braking suggestion without requiring the driver to press the steering-wheel button. This is possible when the traffic situation is clear and the intersection does not involve complicated or conflicting signal arrangements.
However, automatic acceptance is not guaranteed in every situation. If the system detects several traffic lights with different signal states or cannot confidently determine which signal applies to the vehicle, it may switch to a manual confirmation request.
The driver can override braking at any time by pressing the accelerator pedal.
What Happens If the Light Turns Green?
One important part of BMW Traffic Light Recognition is how the system responds when the signal changes during braking.
If the traffic light turns green after braking has started, the vehicle may cancel the braking process automatically, but only when specific conditions are satisfied. These conditions can include:
- The red light is no longer detected.
- A green light has been detected at least once.
- ACC remains active.
- The driver is paying attention to the road.
If driver attention is not detected, the system may continue braking after an audible warning. This is intended to prevent the vehicle from moving forward without a clear driver response.
The driver can also cancel the braking process manually by pressing the accelerator pedal. This remains the quickest way to respond when the traffic signal changes or when the system’s interpretation does not match the real-world situation.
Green-Light Departure Reminder
Traffic Light Recognition is not limited to red-light braking. It can also remind the driver when a traffic light changes from red to green.
When the vehicle is stopped at a red light, the KAFAS camera continues monitoring the signal. If the light changes to green and the driver does not begin moving, the system may provide:
- A tactile warning
- An audible warning
- A visual traffic-light indication in the instrument display
If the driver is detected as inattentive, the warning may be issued more quickly. Otherwise, the timing can be adjusted according to the selected system settings.
When another vehicle is stopped ahead, the reminder may be delayed until that vehicle begins to move. This prevents unnecessary warnings when the driver cannot proceed because traffic is still blocking the lane.
The reminder is normally issued only when there is free space ahead of the BMW.
How to Activate the Feature
The exact menu layout may vary by model, software version and vehicle production date. On supported vehicles, the settings are generally found through the following path:
CAR → Settings → Driving Assistance → Driving → Speed Assistance
Then activate:
- The option for adjusting speed according to traffic lights
- Automatic acceptance or manual acceptance
For the green-light reminder, the menu may be located under:
CAR → Settings → Driving Assistance → Driving → Traffic Light Recognition
From there, the driver can activate Traffic Light Recognition and choose the preferred reminder timing.
The vehicle may also need to be placed in a suitable driving mode with Active Cruise Control switched on. If the “Predictive Driving” display option is active, Traffic Light Recognition may be disabled, depending on the vehicle configuration.

Traffic Light Recognition is not available on every BMW. The feature requires the correct equipment and software configuration.

The feature began series production in July 2020 and was offered only in selected European countries. Availability can depend on:

Not every BMW will contain every module listed above. The exact control-unit layout depends on the vehicle’s equipment level, model generation and optional systems.
This is why coding or retrofit work should not be based on a single module alone. Camera calibration, radar integration, driver monitoring and vehicle software compatibility can all affect whether the feature operates correctly.
System Limitations
Like every camera-based driver assistance system, BMW Traffic Light Recognition has limitations.
Traffic Light Not Detected
If the KAFAS camera cannot identify the traffic light, the system may not provide braking assistance. In some cases, navigation data may indicate that a traffic signal exists, but the system can still show an unavailable status if the camera cannot confirm the signal visually.
Detection Happens Too Late
If the red light is detected too late, the system may not be able to provide a braking suggestion. If the driver confirms a late braking request and the system cannot safely complete the expected action, a red “X” may appear instead of the green check mark.
A priority driving warning may also be issued when appropriate.
Obstructed View
Traffic lights can be hidden by:
- Large vehicles
- Trees
- Construction equipment
- Heavy rain
- Snow
- Dirt on the windshield
- Bright sunlight
- Poor visibility
- Roadside signs
If the camera’s view becomes blocked after braking has started, the system may fail to detect a change from red to green. In that case, braking can continue until the vehicle stops.
The driver can cancel the braking action by pressing the accelerator pedal.
Complex Intersections
Some intersections contain several traffic lights with different functions. A signal may control:
- A dedicated turning lane
- A bicycle crossing
- A pedestrian crossing
- An adjacent lane
- A separate road direction
When the system cannot confidently determine which signal applies, it may provide only a manual braking request, even if automatic acceptance has been selected.
Comfortable Braking May Not Be Possible
BMW generally starts braking only when the vehicle can reach the defined stopping point using comfortable deceleration.
If the system determines that comfortable braking is no longer possible, it may ask the driver to accept braking. In this situation, the driver must remain ready to take control immediately.
The limitations of ACC and Speed Limit Assist also apply to Traffic Light Recognition.
Is BMW Traffic Light Recognition Fully Autonomous?
No. BMW Traffic Light Recognition is a driver assistance feature, not a fully automated driving system.
The driver must continue to:
- Watch the road
- Monitor the traffic light
- Keep both hands ready for control
- Observe lane markings and road users
- Override the system when necessary
- Follow all local traffic laws
The system is designed to reduce workload and provide support, not to replace human judgment.
A camera can misunderstand a signal, especially in poor weather or at complex intersections. Drivers should never assume that the system has recognized every traffic light correctly.
