Some BMW models are fitted with special equipment code S843, also known as engine power reduction. This factory restriction lowers the engine’s official output, usually to reduce insurance costs or horsepower-related taxation in certain countries.
The restriction is often found on BMW models sold in markets such as France, Austria, and Belgium. In normal city driving, the difference may be difficult to notice. However, at higher engine speeds, the car can feel less responsive and may run out of breath earlier than expected.
What Does BMW S843 Do?
S843 limits the engine’s available power through the engine control software. A good example is the BMW 320i with the N20 engine. The unrestricted version produces around 184 hp, while the restricted version may be rated at approximately 163 hp.
The car still drives smoothly, but the reduced output can be noticeable during:
- Fast motorway acceleration
- Overtaking
- Higher-RPM driving
- Uphill performance
- Full-throttle acceleration
Because the engine hardware may already support the higher factory output, some owners choose to remove the restriction by restoring the original unrestricted software configuration.
Can E-Sys Remove the Restriction?
On compatible BMW F-series vehicles, E-Sys can be used to remove code 843 from the Vehicle Order, also called the FA or VO list. After the change, the relevant engine control unit must be coded and programmed correctly.
For older BMW E-series models, the process is different. NCS Expert is commonly used to remove $843 from the FA/VO list stored in the CAS and LMA modules. The DME or DDE may then require programming with suitable BMW diagnostic software.
This is not the same as installing an aggressive performance tune. The goal is to restore the engine’s original factory specification rather than pushing it beyond the manufacturer’s standard output.
Important E-Sys Preparation
Before starting, make sure you have:
- A compatible E-Sys installation
- Correct full PSdZData files
- A stable vehicle connection
- A reliable 13.8-volt power supply
- A backup copy of the original Vehicle Order
- The correct software level for your vehicle
A weak battery is one of the biggest risks during ECU programming. The vehicle should be connected to a powerful, stable external power supply, ideally capable of maintaining the required voltage during the entire procedure.
Never attempt engine programming with an unstable battery or an interrupted laptop connection.
General Coding Process
The process usually involves three main stages.
First, read and save the original Vehicle Order. Create at least one backup before making any changes. Then open the SALAPA element and remove code 843. After calculating the new FP, save the revised FA and write it back to the appropriate vehicle modules.
Second, read the vehicle’s ECU list and apply the updated Vehicle Order to the relevant engine control unit. Depending on the vehicle, this may be the DME for petrol engines or the DDE for diesel engines.
Finally, the engine software may need to be programmed so the power reduction is permanently removed. This is the most sensitive stage and should only be performed with the correct PSdZData version, suitable E-Sys software, and stable power support.
PSdZData and E-Sys Compatibility
The PSdZData level should be close to the vehicle’s current I-Level whenever possible. Using very new data on an older vehicle can create module dependencies and may require additional control units to be updated.
Older E-Sys versions may also be incompatible with newer PSdZData packages. Always confirm that your E-Sys version, PSdZData files, and vehicle software level work together before beginning.
If the correct CAFD files are missing, coding may fail. A missing CAFD error usually means the installed data package does not contain the required files for that DME or DDE.
Professional Advice
Removing S843 may restore the engine’s original factory performance, but it can affect insurance, taxation, emissions compliance, and vehicle registration requirements. Rules vary by country, so check local regulations before making any change.
If you are not familiar with BMW software programming, the safest option is to use a qualified BMW coding specialist. A failed flash can leave the engine control unit in an unusable state and may require professional recovery.
