Losing activation codes after programming a BMW HU-H2 infotainment unit can be frustrating. Features that previously worked—such as Apple CarPlay, navigation, or other connected services—may stop working after the vehicle software is updated.


In many cases, the problem is linked to unauthorized manipulation of the HU-H2 unit. Some coding services use tools such as FutureInstaller to unlock functions without using the correct BMW activation process. These changes can affect the way the vehicle accepts FSC certificates and may cause valid activation codes to disappear or become unusable after programming.


The safest solution is not to repeat the manipulation. The correct approach is to restore the vehicle using official BMW procedures.


Why Are BMW HU-H2 Activation Codes Lost?

The HU-H2 system uses vehicle-specific activation certificates, commonly known as FSC codes. These certificates tell the infotainment unit which services and functions are approved for that particular vehicle.

When the unit is programmed, the software checks the installed certificates again. If the HU-H2 has been modified or contains unofficial activation data, the vehicle may no longer accept the stored codes.

This can happen after:

  • BMW software programming
  • HU-H2 replacement or repair
  • Navigation updates
  • Control-unit replacement
  • Coding performed with unauthorized tools
  • Attempts to activate Apple CarPlay without an official license
  • Changes to the vehicle’s FSC or SWT data

The result may be an error message, missing functions, or a system that refuses previously installed activation codes.


BMW’s Recommended Repair Procedure

If the activation codes are lost after programming, the dealership should contact BMW Technical Support through TSARA.

The recommended request is:


“HU-H2 – New activation codes are required.”

Technical Support can check the vehicle identification number and determine which official activation codes belong to the vehicle. Once approved, the codes can be regenerated and imported into the car using ISTA.

Only activation codes originally issued by BMW for that vehicle should be regenerated. Codes created through vehicle manipulation or unauthorized unlocking should not be recreated as part of the official repair.


What Is TSARA?

TSARA is BMW’s technical support system used by dealers when a repair requires additional guidance or backend assistance. It allows the dealership to provide vehicle details, software information, fault data, and programming history to BMW support.

For an HU-H2 activation problem, the dealership may need to provide:

  • The vehicle’s VIN17
  • Current software and integration level
  • HU-H2 control-unit details
  • Programming history
  • Fault codes
  • A description of the missing services
  • Information about previous coding or retrofitting work

Having accurate information helps BMW determine which FSC certificates are valid for the vehicle.


Importing the Regenerated Codes with ISTA

After BMW provides the correct activation codes, the dealership can import them through ISTA during the approved repair process.


ISTA is BMW’s official diagnostic and programming platform. It is used for vehicle diagnosis, control-unit programming, software updates, and activation-code management.

The exact steps depend on the vehicle model, software version, and HU-H2 configuration. For this reason, activation-code recovery should be completed by a trained BMW technician with suitable programming equipment and a stable power supply.


Interrupting programming or using unsuitable equipment can create additional control-unit problems.


BMW’s Reseller Role and FSC Recreation

BMW has also introduced a backend role known as “Reseller” in the SWT/FSC system. This role is designed to help recreate FSC certificates that a customer already owns.

The system checks the vehicle’s VIN17 and identifies the FSC certificates already registered to that vehicle. When the certificates are recreated, the backend changes the creation time while keeping important data unchanged.

For example, the following information remains the same:

  • AppID
  • UpgradeIndex
  • Vehicle assignment
  • Original certificate details

Changing the creation time can allow the vehicle to accept the certificate again after programming, while preserving the customer’s existing entitlement.

This process is different from creating new unofficial certificates. It is intended to restore valid FSCs that were already issued for the vehicle.


Avoid Unofficial HU-H2 Activation Tools

Unauthorized activation tools may appear to offer a quick way to unlock Apple CarPlay or other BMW features. However, they can create problems later when the vehicle is programmed, updated, or repaired.

Possible consequences include:

  • Activation codes being rejected
  • Functions disappearing after a software update
  • HU-H2 programming errors
  • Additional dealership diagnostic costs
  • Problems with future control-unit replacement
  • Unclear ownership of activated services
  • The need for BMW Technical Support intervention

A feature that works today may stop working after the next official software update.


The Best Way to Prevent the Problem

Before programming or replacing an HU-H2 unit, ask the workshop to check the vehicle’s existing FSC certificates and record the current configuration.

It is also useful to:

  1. Use approved BMW diagnostic equipment.
  2. Confirm that the vehicle battery is properly supported.
  3. Keep a record of official retrofit and activation purchases.
  4. Avoid unofficial FSC generators and activation tools.
  5. Tell the technician about previous coding work.
  6. Confirm that Apple CarPlay or other services are officially licensed.
  7. Ask the dealership to verify the vehicle’s VIN17-based entitlements.

These steps can save time and prevent unnecessary software complications.
