Many BMW owners with the factory Harman Kardon sound system want better sound without replacing the entire audio system. One popular option is coding additional BMW sound profiles through BimmerCode or another compatible coding tool.
On selected BMW F Series and G Series models, coding can add Bang & Olufsen or Bowers & Wilkins sound settings to the iDrive menu. These profiles change the way the existing amplifier and speakers process music. The result can be a wider soundstage, clearer vocals, and a more spacious feel inside the cabin.
However, it is important to understand what this modification really does.
Coding does not turn a Harman Kardon system into a genuine Bang & Olufsen or Bowers & Wilkins system. The speakers, amplifier, wiring, speaker locations, and acoustic tuning remain the same. Real factory high-end systems use different hardware and vehicle-specific calibration.
The upgrade is best viewed as a digital sound-processing adjustment—not a complete hardware conversion.
What Does BMW Audio Coding Change?
BMW audio coding activates alternative digital signal-processing profiles already available in some head units and amplifiers. After coding, the original Logic 7 option may be replaced by a Bang & Olufsen or Bowers & Wilkins sound menu.
The available options depend on several factors, including:
- BMW model and chassis
- Production date
- Installed head unit
- Amplifier type
- iDrive generation
- Vehicle software version
- Factory audio option code
The Harman Kardon Surround Sound System with option code SA688 is usually the most suitable starting point. Some vehicles with smaller Harman Kardon systems, such as SA674, may have fewer available functions. For example, the graphic equalizer may not appear or may not work as expected.
BimmerCode also explains that Expert Mode is intended for experienced users, while the app automatically saves coding data when a control unit is read. This backup can be used to restore the original settings if something goes wrong.
BMW F Series: Activating Bang & Olufsen Sound Settings
On many BMW F Series models, the Bang & Olufsen menu is located inside the NBT head unit.
A commonly used coding path is:
HU_NBT → Expert Mode → 3000 HMI → HIGH_END_AUDIO_MENUE
Depending on the vehicle software, you may see values similar to:

For most Harman Kardon-equipped cars, keine_insz is the more practical choice. It activates the Bang & Olufsen sound menu without adding a speaker-lighting option that may not work with the original Harman Kardon grilles.
After coding, the Logic 7 selection may be replaced by a Bang & Olufsen menu. You can then test sound profiles such as Studio and Expanded.
Not every F Series BMW supports the same menu or parameter. The exact coding options can change with the head unit and software version, so never copy a coding path blindly from another model.
BMW G Series: Activating Bowers & Wilkins Sound Profiles
Newer BMW G Series vehicles commonly use the HU_MGU head unit. In these cars, the high-end sound profile is usually labelled Bowers & Wilkins.
When available, the safest method is to use the standard BimmerCode menu:
Headunit → Bowers & Wilkins Sound Settings → Active
This option is preferable to Expert Mode because the software displays only settings supported by the vehicle configuration.
On some G3x models, an Expert Mode path may look like this:
HU_MGU → Expert Mode → 3002 AUDIO_BROADCAST → AUDIO_SYSTEM → alev4_ram
The parameter must actually be present in your vehicle before changing it. BMW can revise control-unit layouts and coding values through software updates. A parameter that works on one G30, G20, G05, or G06 may not be available on another.
Some online guides incorrectly refer to HU_MGT. In many cases, the correct head-unit designation is HU_MGU, but the vehicle itself should always be checked before making changes.
Studio or Expanded: Which Sound Profile Is Better?
There is no single setting that sounds perfect in every BMW. The best choice depends on your speakers, music source, seating position, and personal taste.
Studio Mode
Studio mode usually sounds more direct and controlled. Voices remain focused, and instruments are easier to place. The presentation can feel cleaner and more precise, especially from the driver’s seat.
Studio is often a good match for:
- Rock music
- Pop music
- Acoustic recordings
- Podcasts
- Audiobooks
- Singer-songwriter tracks
- Listeners who prefer clear vocals
It can also be useful when you want the sound to remain concentrated near the front of the cabin.
Expanded or Extended Mode
Expanded mode creates a wider and more spacious soundstage. Music appears to spread across the interior rather than coming from clearly defined speaker locations.
Expanded is often enjoyable with:
- Electronic music
- Live concerts
- Film soundtracks
- Classical music
- Orchestral recordings
- Ambient music
- Large, cinematic productions
This setting may sound more impressive during a quick test drive, but it is not automatically more accurate. Some drivers prefer its immersive character, while others find Studio mode more natural.
The best test is simple: use familiar songs and drive for several days with each profile. Switching settings every few seconds can be misleading because the louder or wider option may initially seem better.
Recommended Equalizer Starting Point
If your BMW provides a graphic equalizer after coding, the following settings can be used as a neutral starting point:

These values are not a universal BMW audio tune. Every cabin behaves differently. A BMW 3 Series will not sound exactly like an X5, 5 Series, or 7 Series because the cabin size, door construction, seating position, and speaker locations are different.
Avoid large boosts, especially in the bass range. Raising several frequencies at once can make the system sound louder but less controlled. It may also increase the workload on the amplifier and speakers.
A better approach is to adjust one frequency band at a time and test several types of music. If vocals sound sharp, reduce the upper-midrange slightly. If bass feels loose, reducing the 200 Hz area may help more than increasing the subwoofer level.
Can the Amplifier Also Be Coded?
Some BMW amplifiers contain additional equalizer or DSP data sets. On certain vehicles, users may find extra parameters in the amplifier control unit, such as:

Depending on the amplifier and software version, different equalizer data sets may be available. Some BMW coding enthusiasts test values such as F10 or RR4.
These changes are separate from activating the Bang & Olufsen or Bowers & Wilkins menu. Changing the iDrive sound profile does not automatically change the amplifier data set.
Do not change several unknown amplifier parameters at the same time. If the sound becomes distorted, harsh, weak, or unbalanced, it becomes much harder to identify which setting caused the problem.
BimmerCode may not provide amplifier access for every BMW model and control-unit combination. If the amplifier does not appear in the app, that does not necessarily mean the vehicle is faulty.
What You Need Before Coding
Before starting, prepare the following:
- A supported BMW vehicle
- BimmerCode or a compatible BMW coding platform
- A suitable OBD adapter
- A fully charged vehicle battery
- A stable power supply for longer coding sessions
- A reliable phone or tablet connection
- A backup of the original coding data
A weak battery is one of the biggest avoidable risks during vehicle coding. Keep the ignition on as instructed by the coding software, switch off unnecessary electrical accessories, and avoid interrupting the connection while the control unit is being written.
Expert Mode should only be used when you understand the control unit and the parameter being changed. The wrong value may create warning messages, disable a function, or require professional diagnostic programming.
Important Safety and Compatibility Notes
Coding is not the same as programming or flashing a complete vehicle software package. Even so, it can affect important electronic control units.
Keep these points in mind:
- Back up the original coding first.
- Confirm the exact head unit in your vehicle.
- Check the factory audio system before coding.
- Do not assume every BMW uses the same parameters.
- Avoid changing multiple unknown values together.
- Do not code with a weak battery.
- Restore the original backup if the sound menu behaves strangely.
A menu appearing in iDrive does not prove that every function will work. For example, a lighting setting may appear even though the original Harman Kardon speaker grilles do not contain lighting hardware.
The factory Bowers & Wilkins system is a complete package involving dedicated speakers, amplification, installation locations, and acoustic calibration. BMW’s official high-end systems are engineered around the specific vehicle cabin, rather than being created by a menu change alone.
Optional Speaker Upgrade
Coding can improve the sound character, but hardware upgrades usually create a larger change.
Some BMW F3x models may accept certain original-equipment Bowers & Wilkins speakers in selected locations. Possible parts discussed for compatible installations include:
- Center midrange speaker: 65139279632
- Center tweeter: 65139279631
- Door midrange speaker: 65139279635
- Door tweeter: 65139279629
These part numbers must be verified against the vehicle VIN, chassis, production date, connector, impedance, mounting points, and amplifier compatibility. A speaker that physically fits does not automatically provide the correct electrical load or acoustic result.
When replacing door speakers, adding proper sound deadening can also help. Aluminum butyl treatment may reduce:
- Door-panel vibration
- Rattles
- Resonance
- Uncontrolled bass movement
Never cover drainage holes, window mechanisms, wiring, door locks, airbags, or moving components. Poor installation can create safety problems and annoying new noises.
How to Restore the Original BMW Sound Menu
If the result is not to your liking, you can restore the original coding backup.
For many F Series vehicles, the original setting may be restored through:
HU_NBT → 3000 HMI → HIGH_END_AUDIO_MENUE → kein_menue
For G Series models, disable the Bowers & Wilkins sound setting or restore the saved HU_MGU backup.
Temporary warning messages may appear while the head unit restarts. In many cases, they disappear after switching the vehicle off, locking it, waiting a few minutes, and restarting normally. If a warning remains, scan the vehicle and restore the original coding before seeking professional assistance.
