BMW Gxx–Fxx Brakes Explained: Sport, M Sport or M Performance?

BMW has never made its brake options as easy to understand as its brochures suggest. Depending on the engine, model year, production date and selected options, two cars that look almost identical can leave the factory with noticeably different brake systems.

That is why the phrases Sport brakes, M Sport brakes and M Performance brakes often cause confusion.

The caliper color alone does not always tell the whole story. Disc diameter, disc thickness, caliper design, piston count and wheel clearance all matter. A blue caliper may indicate the factory-fitted S2NHA M Sport brake option, while yellow, red or orange calipers are commonly associated with the M Performance brake kit. However, the actual hardware should always be checked by part number and vehicle specification.

Before ordering a BMW, brake upgrade or replacement discs, confirm the exact front and rear brake sizes with your BMW dealer or a specialist. BMW used different part numbers across production periods, and some details can vary between markets.

Why BMW brake specifications are confusing

BMW documentation often lists brake options without clearly showing the complete hardware fitted to each model. The same brake option can also use different front disc sizes depending on the engine.

For example, the S2NHA M Sport brake package does not always mean the same front brake diameter:

  • Smaller engines generally receive 340 mm front discs.
  • Six-cylinder models and selected larger engines receive 370 mm front discs.
  • The rear M Sport brake size is generally 345 mm.
  • The 18-inch M Performance system uses 370 mm front discs and 345 mm rear discs across the relevant applications.

That difference is important. If you are buying an M Sport-equipped BMW, do not assume it has the largest available brakes simply because the calipers are blue.

Standard BMW brake systems

The following brake configurations cover the main European applications described for these BMW models. Exact fitment should still be confirmed using the vehicle identification number and production date.

Standard brake variant 1

This setup is typically found on models up to the 320i, including all-wheel-drive versions, but excluding the 320d.

Front axle

  • Disc size: 300 × 22 mm
  • Caliper: Aluminium, single-piston floating caliper
  • Piston diameter: 57 mm

Rear axle

  • Disc size: 300 × 20 mm
  • Caliper: Cast-iron, single-piston floating caliper
  • Piston diameter: 42 mm

This is the smaller standard system. It is suitable for normal road use, but it offers less thermal capacity than the larger systems fitted to more powerful models.

Standard brake variant 2

The 320d, including xDrive versions, generally uses a slightly larger front disc.

Front axle

  • Disc size: 312 × 24 mm
  • Caliper: Aluminium, single-piston floating caliper
  • Piston diameter: 57 mm

Rear axle

  • Disc size: 300 × 20 mm
  • Caliper: Cast-iron, single-piston floating caliper
  • Piston diameter: 42 mm

The 312 mm front disc gives the diesel model additional braking capacity compared with the smaller 300 mm setup.

Standard brake variant 3

This configuration is associated with models such as:

  • 325d
  • 330d
  • 328i
  • 425d
  • 430d
  • 428i
  • xDrive versions of the above models

Front axle

  • Disc size: 330 × 24 mm
  • Caliper: Aluminium, single-piston floating caliper
  • Piston diameter: 57 mm

Rear axle

  • Disc size: 300 × 20 mm
  • Caliper: Cast-iron, single-piston floating caliper
  • Piston diameter: 42 mm

These brakes are larger than the systems used on lower-powered models and are designed to handle the extra weight and performance of the six-cylinder diesel and petrol models.

Standard brake variant 4

The most powerful standard models, including versions of the 335i, 335d and 435i, use a more serious factory brake setup.

Front axle

  • Disc size: 340 × 30 mm
  • Caliper: Aluminium, four-piston fixed caliper
  • Piston diameter: 40 mm

Rear axle

  • Disc size: 330 × 20 mm
  • Caliper: Cast-iron, single-piston floating caliper
  • Piston diameter: 42 mm

Unlike a single-piston floating caliper, a four-piston fixed caliper provides more even pad pressure and stronger resistance to flex. This is one reason the larger 335i and 435i models have a noticeably different braking package.

What is the S102A reinforced brake option?

The S102A reinforced brake option upgrades the front and rear hardware to the larger system used on more powerful BMW models.

Front axle

  • Disc size: 340 × 30 mm
  • Caliper: Aluminium, four-piston fixed caliper
  • Piston diameter: 40 mm

Rear axle

  • Disc size: 330 × 20 mm
  • Caliper: Cast-iron, single-piston floating caliper
  • Piston diameter: 42 mm

This option should not automatically be confused with the blue-caliper S2NHA M Sport brake package. The hardware may be similar to the brakes used on higher-performance models, but the specification and appearance are different.

What are BMW S2NHA M Sport brakes?

The S2NHA M Sport brake option is usually recognised by its blue-painted brake calipers. It is a factory-order option and is available in different forms depending on the engine and model.

The most important point is that S2NHA does not provide one single front brake size for every BMW.

S2NHA M Sport brakes for smaller engines

Models below the 325d and 328i range generally receive:

Front axle

  • Disc diameter: 340 mm
  • Caliper: Four-piston fixed caliper

Available disc types include:

  • Smooth disc: 34 11 6 792 223
  • Drilled disc: 34 10 6 797 602
  • Approximate drilled disc weight: 10.27 kg

Rear axle

  • Disc diameter: 345 mm
  • Caliper: Two-piston caliper

Available disc types include:

  • Smooth disc: 34 20 6 797 607
  • Drilled disc: 34 20 6 797 600
  • Approximate drilled disc weight: 8.63 kg

This is a major upgrade over the smaller standard brakes. However, it is not the same as having the 370 mm front system.

S2NHA M Sport brakes for larger engines

The 328i, 325d, 330d, 335i and selected 335d models generally receive the larger front setup.

Front axle

  • Disc diameter: 370 mm
  • Four-piston fixed caliper
  • Smooth disc: 34 10 6 797 606
  • Drilled disc: 34 10 6 797 603
  • Approximate drilled disc weight: 11.71 kg
  • Approximate smooth disc weight: 12.44 kg

Rear axle

  • Disc diameter: 345 mm
  • Two-piston caliper
  • Smooth disc: 34 20 6 797 607
  • Drilled disc: 34 20 6 797 600
  • Approximate drilled disc weight: 8.63 kg

This is the largest factory S2NHA configuration described for these applications.

Smooth, drilled and grooved discs: what is the difference?

A smooth brake disc is normally the quietest and most straightforward choice for road driving. It provides a consistent friction surface and is often the best option for daily use.

Drilled and grooved discs are designed to improve surface cleaning, water clearance and resistance to glazing under demanding conditions. They can also give the car a more aggressive appearance.

However, drilled discs are not automatically better for every driver. On a road car, pad choice, brake fluid, tyre grip, cooling and driving style can matter just as much as the disc design.

For BMW models already equipped with 340 mm front brakes, original drilled and grooved BMW discs may be available as a retrofit. Cars upgraded to the S2NHA M Sport system may also accept the corresponding drilled replacement discs.

Always confirm:

  • Disc diameter
  • Disc thickness
  • Centre bore
  • Mounting pattern
  • Minimum pad thickness
  • Correct left and right-hand part numbers
  • Compatibility with the existing caliper and carrier

Installing a disc that looks correct but has the wrong thickness or offset is not a harmless mistake. Brake parts must fit precisely.

What is the BMW 18-inch M Performance brake system?

The 18-inch M Performance brake system is a more focused upgrade. It uses drilled and grooved discs at both axles, larger multi-piston calipers and weight-optimised components.

Front axle

  • Disc size: 370 × 30 mm
  • Caliper: Four-piston fixed caliper
  • Disc type: Drilled and grooved

Rear axle

  • Disc size: 345 × 24 mm
  • Caliper: Two-piston caliper
  • Disc type: Drilled and grooved

The calipers may be available in several colours, including:

  • Yellow or gold
  • Orange
  • Red

The disc design and lightweight construction are intended to reduce unsprung and rotating mass while improving braking performance during repeated hard use.

One important detail is often misunderstood: the weight reduction does not come simply from the grooves. It comes mainly from the construction and material used in the performance disc.

For comparison:

  • M Performance 370 mm disc: approximately 11.8 kg
  • Standard S2NHA 370 mm disc: approximately 16.5 kg

Lower rotating weight can improve steering response, suspension movement and the overall feel of the car.

Is the M Performance system better than S2NHA M Sport brakes?

The answer depends on the original vehicle.

On models such as the 328i, 335i, 325d, 330d and 335dX, the S2NHA M Sport option already uses 370 mm front discs and 345 mm rear discs. Retrofitting the drilled and grooved M Performance discs may therefore provide a similar basic brake size.

The main differences can include:

  • Disc construction
  • Disc weight
  • Disc surface design
  • Caliper colour
  • Package-specific hardware
  • Availability of certain replacement parts

On smaller models, the difference is more significant. These cars may receive 340 mm front discs with the S2NHA option, while the 18-inch M Performance system upgrades the front axle to 370 mm.

That means the M Performance kit can be a much larger step for four-cylinder models than for cars that already have the 370 mm S2NHA brakes.

Wheel clearance: the detail many owners miss

The 370 mm M Performance brake system requires suitable wheels with a minimum diameter of 18 inches.

But an 18-inch wheel is not automatically compatible.

The wheel must also have the correct internal barrel shape, spoke design and offset. Some wheels have thick spokes or limited space around the caliper. Others may physically measure 18 inches but still fail to clear the brake hardware.

For example, certain BMW alloy wheels designed for the X1 E84 may have a thicker inner construction and may not clear larger performance calipers when fitted to another model.

Before installing the brake kit, check:

  • Wheel diameter
  • Wheel width
  • Offset
  • Inner barrel profile
  • Spoke clearance
  • Caliper clearance
  • Winter wheel compatibility
  • Clearance after balancing weights are fitted

A professional brake template or test fit is the safest approach. Never rely only on the wheel size written on the sidewall.

F80 BMW M3 and M4 brake specifications

The F80 M3 and related M cars use a different level of braking hardware.

Standard performance brakes

Front axle

  • Disc size: 380 × 30 mm
  • Approximate disc weight: 11.3 kg

Rear axle

  • Disc size: 370 × 24 mm
  • Approximate disc weight: 9.3 kg

Carbon-ceramic brakes

The optional carbon-ceramic system provides larger discs with significantly lower weight.

Front axle

  • Disc size: 400 × 38 mm
  • Approximate disc weight: 7.4 kg

Rear axle

  • Disc size: 380 × 28 mm
  • Approximate disc weight: 5.8 kg

Carbon-ceramic brakes offer excellent heat resistance and reduced unsprung weight, but they are considerably more expensive to replace. For a road-driven car, the best choice depends on usage rather than headline specifications alone.

Brake upgrades for the BMW M Performance Power Kit

Some BMW models equipped with the M Performance Power Kit may require a brake upgrade. Extra engine power and higher performance can place greater demands on the braking system, especially during repeated high-speed stops.

The correct brake requirement depends on:

  • Engine
  • Model year
  • Body style
  • Original brake option
  • Software and hardware package
  • Wheel specification
  • Market

Before fitting the M Performance Power Kit, check the complete installation requirements for the exact vehicle. A power upgrade should never be treated as an engine-only modification.

How to identify the brakes fitted to your BMW

The safest way to identify the correct brake system is to use several checks together.

1. Check the vehicle build specification

The build sheet may show codes such as S102A or S2NHA. These codes are useful, but they should not be the only source of information.

2. Measure the discs

Measure the outside diameter and confirm the disc thickness. Do not measure through the wheel spokes unless you can do so accurately.

3. Count the caliper pistons

A single-piston floating caliper looks very different from a four-piston fixed caliper. The rear M Sport setup commonly uses a two-piston caliper.

4. Check the BMW part number

The part number stamped or listed for the disc and caliper is often the most reliable way to confirm fitment.

5. Ask a BMW specialist

Provide the VIN, production date and current wheel specification. A specialist can often confirm the exact original brake package and the correct upgrade path.

Final advice before ordering BMW brake parts

BMW brake systems can look similar while using different discs, carriers and calipers. The most common mistake is ordering parts based only on the model name or caliper colour.

Before buying, confirm:

  • Front disc diameter and thickness
  • Rear disc diameter and thickness
  • Caliper type
  • Caliper piston count
  • Correct BMW part numbers
  • Wheel clearance
  • Brake pad compatibility
  • Brake hose and carrier compatibility
  • ABS and electronic parking brake requirements
  • Legal requirements in your country

The simple takeaway is this:

S2NHA M Sport brakes are not identical across every BMW model. Smaller models generally receive 340 mm front discs, while larger engines can receive 370 mm front discs. The 18-inch M Performance brake system uses 370 mm front discs and 345 mm rear discs with drilled and grooved, weight-optimised components.

The best brake system is not always the biggest or most colourful one. It is the system that fits your BMW correctly, clears your wheels, matches your driving style and uses properly verified parts. A few minutes checking the VIN and part numbers can save a very expensive mistake later.
