Seeing the message “Vehicle battery deeply discharged” on a BMW G-Series can be worrying, especially when the engine still starts normally. In some cases, the warning appears only occasionally. In others, the battery becomes so weak that the vehicle will not start at all.
A common fault stored in the Body Domain Controller, or BDC, is:
80402F – Battery deeply discharged
This fault can be linked to a software problem in the Electronic Gearbox Control system, known as the EGS. When the software does not allow the parked vehicle to enter sleep mode correctly, several control modules may remain active. The result is unwanted battery drain while the BMW is parked.
BMW issued service information for affected G-Series vehicles with this condition. The official repair path focuses on checking the vehicle’s integration level, updating the software when required, and then testing the battery through the Energy Diagnostics test module.
What Do the BMW Warning Messages Mean?
The problem may display one or both of these Check Control messages:
Yellow Check Control Message 229
“Start engine. Battery severely discharged.”
This warning means the 12-volt battery has reached a very low state of charge. The BMW may still start, but the battery may not have enough reserve power for the next start.
Red Check Control Message 213
“Stop carefully. Power supply.”
A red warning should be treated more seriously. Stop in a safe location and avoid switching the vehicle off until professional assistance is available, unless continuing to drive would be unsafe.
The warning may disappear after charging or driving, but that does not always mean the original problem has been fixed. If the vehicle continues to stay awake while parked, the battery can discharge again.
What Does Fault Code 80402F Mean?
Fault code 80402F is stored in the BDC fault memory and relates to a fully or deeply discharged vehicle battery.
The important point is that this fault does not automatically mean the battery itself is defective. The battery may be weak, but the vehicle may also have a parasitic drain caused by a control module that does not switch off properly.
In the BMW service information, the reported cause is a software error in the EGS. Because of this error, the vehicle may not enter normal sleep mode after it is parked. The vehicle then continues using electrical power until the 12-volt battery becomes severely discharged. (NHTSA)
That is why replacing the battery without checking the software can lead to the same problem returning.
Which BMW G-Series Models May Be Affected?
The issue may affect selected BMW G-Series vehicles equipped with:
- Optional equipment 01CE – Recuperation system
- Automatic transmission 8HP51 or 8HP76
- Specific EGS software integration levels
Potentially affected model families include:
- G01 and G02 with B57 engines, produced until July 2021
- G05, G06, G07 and G18 with B57 or B58 engines, produced through late 2022 depending on model
- G11 and G12 with B57 engines
- G20, G21, G28 and G42 with various engines, produced until June 2022
- G22, G23 and G26 with various engines, produced through mid-December 2022
- G30, G31 and G32 with B47, B48, B57 or B58 engines, produced through mid-December 2022
Production cut-off dates can vary by model and market, so checking the vehicle identification number and current software level is more accurate than relying only on the build date. BMW’s published bulletin lists the affected model groups and production periods in detail.
Which Software Levels Can Cause the Problem?
The reported faulty EGS software ranges include:
- S15A-22-07-550 to below S15A-22-07-580
- S18A-22-07-550 to below S18A-22-07-580
- S15A-22-11-510 to below S15A-22-11-540
- S18A-22-11-510 to below S18A-22-11-540
A vehicle with one of these integration levels may need programming and coding.
The recommended solution level is generally:
22-11-540 or higher
The BMW repair procedure references ISTA software version 4.39.2x or higher for this software correction. However, the exact programming plan should be selected by a qualified BMW technician using the current vehicle data and approved diagnostic equipment.
How to Diagnose BMW Fault Code 80402F
A proper diagnosis should follow a clear process.
Step 1: Check the Vehicle Integration Level
The first step is checking the BMW’s current I-level. This can be done with professional BMW diagnostic equipment, such as ISTA, or through the appropriate BMW service systems.
If the vehicle has an affected EGS software level, the vehicle should be programmed and coded before the battery problem is considered solved.
If the software level is already outside the affected range, the technician should continue with a wider battery and energy diagnosis.
Step 2: Run the Energy Diagnostics Test Module
The BMW Energy Diagnostics test module should be completed carefully. This test helps determine:
- Battery state of charge
- Battery condition and capacity
- Recent discharge history
- Possible standby-current problems
- Whether the battery can be recharged
- Whether battery replacement is required
BMW’s service procedure states that the battery should be charged or replaced according to the instructions provided by the test module.
Step 3: Program and Code the Vehicle
If the vehicle contains the affected EGS software, the repair normally involves programming and coding the vehicle.
This is not the same as simply clearing the fault code. Clearing 80402F may remove the warning temporarily, but it will not correct software that prevents the car from entering sleep mode.
Vehicle programming should be performed using a stable, approved power supply. Low voltage during programming can interrupt communication with control modules and create additional faults.
Step 4: Test or Replace the Battery
A deeply discharged battery may suffer permanent capacity loss, especially if it has remained at a very low voltage for an extended period.
The battery should be tested after the software issue has been addressed. If it fails the battery test, replacement may be necessary.
When replacing a BMW battery, the new battery must be correctly registered. Battery registration allows the vehicle’s energy management system to recognize the new battery and apply the correct charging strategy.
However, BMW’s bulletin also warns that registering a replacement battery too early can delete useful stored energy history. For this reason, the original cause of the discharge should be identified before registration whenever possible.
Should You Replace the Battery First?
Not always.
If the battery is old, damaged or unable to hold a charge, replacement may be needed. But if the real cause is faulty EGS software, a new battery can also become discharged.
The best repair order is:
- Scan the vehicle for fault code 80402F.
- Check the current I-level.
- Confirm whether the EGS software is affected.
- Program and code the vehicle when required.
- Run Energy Diagnostics.
- Charge or replace the battery according to the test results.
- Register the replacement battery if one is installed.
- Confirm that the vehicle enters sleep mode correctly.
This approach avoids replacing parts without fixing the reason for the battery drain.
Can You Drive the BMW With This Warning?
If the warning is yellow and the vehicle starts normally, drive only as far as necessary to reach a qualified repair facility. Avoid repeatedly starting and stopping the vehicle because the battery may not have enough power for another start.
If a red power-supply warning appears, stop carefully in a safe place. Continued driving may not be advisable because electrical systems can become unavailable as voltage drops.
Do not rely on a long drive as the complete repair. Driving may recharge the battery temporarily, but it will not correct an EGS software fault or another parasitic drain.
Other Possible Causes of BMW Battery Drain
Although the EGS software issue is documented for specific G-Series vehicles, other causes are also possible. A technician should consider:
- Weak or incorrectly specified battery
- Faulty Intelligent Battery Sensor, or IBS
- Comfort Access staying active
- Aftermarket dash cameras or tracking devices
- Alarm or security system faults
- Doors, tailgate or bonnet not registering as closed
- Infotainment or telematics modules staying awake
- Poor battery connections
- Charging-system problems
- Vehicle wiring damage or water intrusion
- Repeated short trips
This is why the fault code should be treated as a starting point, not as the entire diagnosis.
