After completing maintenance on a BMW G-Model, the service reminder may remain active on the dashboard. The Condition Based Service system, often called CBS, tracks items such as engine oil, brake pads, brake fluid, and vehicle inspections.

BMW recommends using a diagnostic system for the most reliable service reset. However, some G-Models also allow a manual reset through the instrument cluster or the high-beam control button.

Important Brake Reset Requirements

A brake service reset will only work when the brake contact has been triggered.

If the brake wear sensor is still in good condition, the reset may only be possible with BMW diagnostic equipment.

Before starting the reset, make sure you:

• Release the parking brake.
• Do not press the brake pedal.
• Turn off the Automatic Hold function.
• Keep the vehicle stationary.
• Use a stable vehicle battery voltage.

Low voltage can interrupt the reset or cause the service reminder to return later.

Method 1: Reset Using the Instrument Cluster Button

This method applies to BMW G-Models equipped with a daily trip distance reset button on the instrument cluster.

Step 1: Activate the Diagnostic Display

Press the START-STOP button three times without starting the engine.

This places the vehicle into the “Check-Analyze-Diagnosis” status, also known as the PWF diagnostic mode.

Step 2: Open the Service Menu

Press and hold the daily trip distance reset button for around 10 seconds.

The first available service item will appear on the display.

Step 3: Select the Service Item

Briefly press the trip reset button to move through the available service options.

Choose the item you want to reset, such as:

• Engine oil
• Front brakes
• Rear brakes
• Brake fluid
• Vehicle check
• General inspection

Step 4: Confirm the Reset

If the reset is available, the instrument cluster will display:

“Reset possible”

Press and hold the trip reset button for approximately 3 seconds.

The display should then confirm:

“Reset successful”

Switch the vehicle off and allow it to enter sleep mode before checking the service menu again.

Method 2: Reset Without an Instrument Cluster Button

Some BMW G-Models do not have a dedicated trip reset button. In this case, the service menu can be accessed using the on-board computer button on the high-beam direction switch.

Step 1: Activate Diagnostic Mode

Press the START-STOP button three times without starting the engine.

Step 2: Open the Service Menu

Press and hold the on-board computer button on the high-beam switch for approximately 10 seconds.

The first service category should appear on the instrument display.

Step 3: Choose the Required Service

Briefly press the same button to move through the service items.

Stop when the correct maintenance category is displayed.

Step 4: Confirm the Reset

When the display shows “Reset possible,” press and hold the on-board computer button for around 3 seconds.

The cluster should show “Reset successful.”



Why Does the BMW Service Reset Disappear?

A successful CBS reset may later disappear for several reasons. The most common causes include:

• Battery undervoltage while the vehicle enters sleep mode.
• Programming the vehicle immediately after a CBS reset.
• Coding the instrument cluster before the car enters sleep mode.
• A damaged or triggered brake pad wear sensor.
• Resetting the wrong service category.
• An incomplete reset procedure.

For the best result, complete the reset and leave the vehicle undisturbed until it fully enters sleep mode. If the message returns, check the battery voltage and scan the vehicle with a BMW-compatible diagnostic tool.
