Choosing the correct BMW FRM2 or FRM3 module can be confusing, especially when replacing a damaged footwell module in an E87, E90, E91, E92, E93 or E89.


The wrong module may cause lighting faults, coding problems, non-working indicators or communication errors. Before buying a replacement, always check the model number printed on the sticker attached to the module housing.

With some FRM3 XE versions, the halogen high-beam or flash-to-pass function may be missing. On pre-facelift vehicles, this function may need to be coded correctly after installation.


Some LED versions can also affect the side indicators. If the side indicators do not work, the wiring may need to be connected to the front indicators, depending on the vehicle configuration.


FRM Modules for AHL Curved Lighting

BMW models equipped with AHL, also known as adaptive or curved lighting, require a suitable AHL-compatible module.

Common options include:

  • FRM2 E87 E9x AHL
  • FRM2 E89 E9x LED AHL
  • FRM3 E87 E92 E93 AHL
  • FRM3 E89 E9x LED AHL
  • FRM3 MAX BROSE

As with other versions, FRM3 LED variants may cause side indicator issues on certain vehicles. Correct wiring and coding may be necessary.


Do Not Use FRM Modules from Other Series

FRM modules from other BMW series may physically look similar, but that does not mean they will function properly in an E9x vehicle.

Using the wrong module can lead to:

  • Headlights that do not work
  • Indicators or fog lights failing
  • Window operation problems
  • Battery drain
  • Communication errors
  • Incorrect vehicle coding
  • Multiple dashboard warning lights

For an E9x BMW, use a module specifically matched to the E87, E90, E91, E92, E93 or compatible E89 configuration.


Final Check Before Buying

Before ordering a BMW FRM module, compare:

  1. The exact part number on the original module
  2. The vehicle chassis and production year
  3. Halogen, xenon or AHL headlight type
  4. LED equipment and fog light configuration
  5. FRM2 or FRM3 version
  6. Manufacturer details, such as MAX BROSE
  7. Required coding and programming support


The safest replacement is usually one that matches the original module’s hardware type and lighting configuration. Even then, coding may still be required.

In short, the best FRM2 or FRM3 module is not simply the newest one. It must match the BMW chassis, lighting system, wiring and vehicle options. Always verify the part number and test the module with proper BMW diagnostic equipment before completing the retrofit.
