Resetting the service interval on a BMW F-model is usually quick, but the process must be completed under the right conditions. If the reset disappears later, the vehicle may have gone into sleep mode with low battery voltage, or the car may have been programmed or coded immediately after the reset.

This guide explains how to reset the engine oil service, vehicle check and statutory inspection dates directly from the vehicle.

Before You Start

A BMW F-model service reset is only possible when these conditions are met:

• No check control message is active.
• Service availability is below 90%.
• The vehicle date is set correctly.
• The required maintenance has already been completed.
• The parking brake is released.
• All doors are closed.
• The brake pedal is not pressed.

The vehicle should also have enough battery voltage. Low voltage can interrupt the process or cause the reset to be lost when the car enters sleep mode.

Important: If you are resetting both the engine oil and vehicle check, always reset the engine oil service first.

How to Reset the BMW Engine Oil Service

1. Sit in the vehicle and close all doors.
2. Release the handbrake.
3. Do not press the brake pedal.
4. Turn on the ignition without starting the engine.
5. Press and hold the trip mileage reset button for about 10 seconds.
6. Wait until the first service item appears on the instrument display.
7. Briefly press the button to move through the available service items.
8. Select the engine oil service.
9. Check that the display shows “Reset possible.”
10. Press and hold the button for approximately 3 seconds.
11. When “Perform reset?” appears, press and hold the button again for 3 seconds.

The display will show a progress bar and the message “Reset in progress.” When the procedure is complete, the vehicle should display “Reset successful.”

Start the engine and check the service menu to confirm that the new service interval has been stored.

Resetting the Vehicle Check

After resetting the engine oil service, repeat the same process for the vehicle check:

1. Hold the trip reset button until the service menu opens.
2. Briefly press the button until Vehicle Check is selected.
3. Confirm that “Reset possible” is displayed.
4. Hold the button for 3 seconds.
5. Confirm “Perform reset?” by holding the button again for 3 seconds.
6. Wait for the progress bar to finish.

Do not switch the ignition off during the reset. A terminal change or timeout can cancel the operation.

Resetting Statutory Inspection Dates

The legal inspection or emissions test date is entered through the iDrive control system rather than the trip reset button.

Follow these menu steps:

1. Open the main menu.
2. Select Vehicle Info and press the controller.
3. Select Vehicle Status.
4. Open Service Requirements.
5. Select Vehicle Analysis.
6. Choose Set Service Appointment.
7. Set the correct month or year.
8. Turn and press the controller to confirm.

Enter the date carefully. An incorrect vehicle date can prevent the CBS system from accepting the service reset.

Why Does the BMW Service Reset Disappear?

A reset may be lost for several reasons. The most common causes include:

• Battery voltage drops while the vehicle enters sleep mode.
• The vehicle is programmed directly after the CBS reset.
• Coding is performed on the instrument cluster.
• The reset process is interrupted by a terminal change.
• The service was reset without completing the maintenance.
• The ignition was switched off before the reset finished.

If the reset disappears, check the battery condition first. A weak battery can create unusual electronic issues during programming, coding or service procedures. It is also good practice to allow the vehicle to enter sleep mode before carrying out further coding or programming work.
