What “No Communication” Actually Means
Your diagnostic tool (ISTA, INPA, Carly, BimmerCode, etc.) can’t talk to the engine computer over the OBD port. The ECU is either:
- Not powered
- Not grounded properly
- Has a broken communication line (PT-CAN, Ethernet, etc.)
- Internally failed
- Or the gateway/FEM/BDC is blocking the signal
Common on N54, N55, B58, N47, N57, B47, B57 and most F-series/G-series cars.
Tools You Really Need (Keep It Simple)
- Good battery charger or power supply (mandatory)
- Quality multimeter
- OBD scan tool that can read individual modules (ISTA is best, E-sys + INPA also works)
- ENET cable for F-series/G-series

Step-by-Step Diagnostic Process (Follow in Order)
1. Basic Power Checks First (Solves 40% of Cases)
- Hook up a proper battery charger – voltage must stay above 13.5V during testing
- Check the main ECU fuses (locations vary — DME main fuse is often in the power distribution box in the engine bay or glovebox)
- Test battery voltage at the ECU power pins (usually 12V+ permanent and ignition-switched)
- Clean and tighten the battery terminals and ground straps (especially body-to-engine grounds)
If power is missing, fix that before anything else.
2. Grounds – The Silent Killer
Bad grounds cause more “no comm” than people think.
Locate the main ECU ground points (usually on the engine block, chassis near the ECU, and under the battery).
Unbolt them, clean the metal to bare shine, apply dielectric grease, and retighten properly.
Test resistance between ECU ground pin and battery negative — should be under 0.5 ohms.
3. Try a Different Cable and Port
- Swap ENET/OBD cables (cheap cables fail constantly)
- Try the OBD port under the dash and any under-hood diagnostic sockets if equipped
- Test with a second scan tool if possible
Still no comm? Move on.
4. Check Communication Lines
Most BMWs use PT-CAN or Ethernet for the DME.
- Inspect the wiring harness from the OBD port to the ECU for damage, rodent chews, or pinched sections (common near the firewall and valve cover)
- Look for green corrosion on connectors
- Wiggle-test the ECU plug while watching the scan tool
- Measure CAN high/low voltages (should be around 2.5V resting, swinging when active)
5. Gateway / FEM / BDC Check
Sometimes the body module is the middleman and it’s the one not talking.
- Try to communicate with FEM/BDC/ZGM first
- If the gateway has no comm, fix that before blaming the ECU
- Check gateway fuses and power
6. Direct ECU Connection Test
If you have a break-out box or feel comfortable:
- Unplug the ECU connector
- Power the ECU directly on the bench with proper pins (only if you know the pinout)
- Some specialists can bench-test communication
This tells you if the ECU itself is alive.
7. Common Specific Failures by Engine
- N54/N55: Water ingress at ECU connector or failed power supply circuit
- B58: FlexRay or Ethernet issues, ground problems
- Diesels (N47/N57): Timing chain debris or voltage spikes killing the DDE
- All: Aftermarket alarm/remote start installs that tapped the wrong wires
When It’s Actually the ECU
If power, grounds, and wiring all check out perfectly and you still have zero communication, the ECU is likely dead internally.
