BMW E8x & E9x Differential Cooling Cover Conversion – Does It Actually Help?

If you run an E8x or E9x BMW hard – track days, long Autobahn runs, or just a built motor – you’ve probably stared at that stock differential cover and wondered if a finned aluminum one would keep things cooler.

I’ve done a few of these swaps myself and helped friends with theirs. Here’s the real talk, no fluff, just what actually works in 2026.

Why Bother with a Cooling Fin Differential Cover?

The stock cover is basically a flat plate. Heat from the gear oil has nowhere to go except through the housing.

A good aluminum cover with big fins adds surface area. More surface = more heat dumped into the air flowing under the car. Some covers also hold a bit more oil.

Is it magic? No.

Is it useful on a heavily modified car or one that sees repeated high-load runs? Yes, a lot of guys notice lower oil temps and less gear whine after long sessions.

It’s still a passive cooler. Don’t expect miracles on a stock daily driver.

Critical First Step: Identify Exactly What Diff You Have

This is where most people mess up.

“188” or “215” only tells you the rough ring gear size. You need the full code:

  • 188K or 188L
  • 215K or 215L

Check the casting numbers on the housing, the part number sticker (if still there), and your chassis number. Production date and transmission type matter a lot.

Here’s a quick reference for common cars (always verify on your actual car):

The Three Most Popular Covers

1. 650i Cover – Part 33117519661 (215K/220K)

Big fins, has a proper fill plug (M22x1.5).

Most popular for E8x/E9x swaps.

You’ll almost always need a spacer sleeve on the rear bearing mount and a longer M14 bolt (commonly M14x1.5x130 10.9).

Watch the exhaust – some fins often need careful trimming on 135i cars. It sits lower than stock.

2. M3 / 1M Cover – Part 33112283010

Looks fantastic, great fin design.

No fill hole in the cover itself. Only use this if your housing already has fill/drain ports or you’re ready to have a shop carefully add them.

3. 188K Cover – Part 33117516280

Good fins and fill plug.

Only fits true 188K housings. 188L is different. Spacers around 15-16 mm are common but measure yours.

Parts You’ll Actually Need

  • Correct cover for your exact housing
  • BMW sealant (Loctite 5970 or 83 19 0 404 517)
  • New fill plugs with O-rings (33117525064) if the cover has them
  • Correct length mounting bolts
  • Custom spacer sleeve or stacked BMW spacers (33176779816 are 5 mm each – some guys use three)
  • Fresh differential oil (correct spec for your diff)
  • Possibly new seals if you open everything up

How to Do the Swap Properly (Don’t Skip Steps)

  1. Confirm your exact differential type and part numbers.
  2. Dry-fit the new cover. Check ring gear clearance, exhaust, subframe, and that the rear mount sits stress-free.
  3. Make or buy the correct spacer so the rear bolt pulls straight.
  4. Clean both sealing surfaces perfectly. No old sealant left.
  5. Apply sealant the BMW way, torque properly (use the repair manual values for your housing).
  6. Fill with the right oil to the correct level on level ground.
  7. Check for leaks, ground clearance, and exhaust clearance after the first drive.

One more thing – metal chips kill diffs fast. If you trim any fins, clean everything like your life depends on it.

Is It Worth It in 2026?

For a stock street car that never sees track or heavy loads? Probably not.

For a tuned 335i, 135i, or anything that does repeated hard runs? A lot of owners (myself included) think the extra cooling margin and slightly bigger oil volume are worth the afternoon’s work and the parts cost.

Just don’t buy the wrong cover. Measure twice, order once.
