Modern BMW vehicles are equipped with a wide range of driver assistance systems designed to make everyday driving safer, easier and less stressful. These technologies can help detect potential hazards, warn the driver, support steering and braking, and simplify parking in tight spaces.
The available systems vary depending on the BMW model, production date, country and installed equipment. This is especially important for vehicles from the S18A, S18C and S18T model series produced from the start of G05 and G15 production.
A feature shown in a diagnostic or vehicle menu does not always mean it is active or available on every car. BMW assistance functions depend on the vehicle’s hardware, software, market configuration and equipment specification.

Important: BMW driver assistance systems are designed to support the driver. They do not replace proper attention, safe driving or responsibility behind the wheel.

Active Side-Collision Protection
Active side-collision protection monitors the area beside the vehicle and helps detect a possible collision with another car, barrier or object.
If the system detects that the BMW is moving too close to an obstacle, it may provide a warning and, where supported, make a steering intervention. This can be particularly useful on narrow roads, in construction zones and when driving through restricted lanes.
The system does not guarantee that every side collision will be prevented. Its performance can be affected by road markings, visibility, speed and sensor conditions.
Rear-End Collision Warning with Braking Function
This system monitors the road ahead for vehicles or objects that may create a rear-end collision risk.
When a possible impact is detected, the BMW may:
- Warn the driver visually and acoustically
- Prepare the braking system
- Apply braking assistance
- Reduce the vehicle’s speed in an emergency
The exact response depends on the vehicle’s speed, distance from the obstacle and the driver’s reaction.
Evasion Assistant
The evasion assistant supports the driver when a sudden obstacle appears in the vehicle’s path.
For example, if a stopped vehicle, fallen object or unexpected hazard is detected, the system may help guide the BMW around the obstacle after the driver begins an evasive manoeuvre.
This technology is not an automatic emergency driving system. The driver must still steer and remain in control of the vehicle.
Intersection Warning with City Braking Function
Intersection warning helps monitor crossing traffic at junctions and intersections.
The system may detect vehicles approaching from the side and warn the driver when there is a risk of collision. At lower urban speeds, the braking function may help reduce the impact or avoid the collision entirely.
This feature can be valuable in busy city areas where visibility is limited by buildings, parked vehicles or other traffic.
Emergency Stop Assistant
The emergency stop assistant is intended for situations where the driver is no longer able to control the vehicle properly.
Depending on the equipment and software version, the BMW may gradually reduce speed, maintain the lane and bring the vehicle to a controlled stop. Hazard warning lights may also be activated.
This is an emergency support function, not a substitute for medical assistance or safe driver operation.
Pedestrian Warning with City Braking Function
Pedestrian warning uses cameras and sensors to detect pedestrians in or near the vehicle’s path.
If a pedestrian is identified as being at risk, the BMW can issue an alert. At city speeds, the braking function may help slow the vehicle or reduce the severity of an impact.
The system may be affected by darkness, rain, snow, poor visibility, unusual pedestrian movement or objects that block the sensors.
Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side-Collision Protection
This system combines lane departure support with side-collision protection.
If the vehicle begins to leave its lane without an obvious indication from the driver, the system may provide steering assistance. If another vehicle or object is detected close to the BMW, additional steering intervention may be applied to help keep the vehicle within a safer path.
The system relies heavily on visible lane markings and correctly functioning sensors.
Lane Departure Warning with Active Steering Intervention
Lane departure warning monitors the vehicle’s position within the lane.
When the BMW detects an unintentional lane departure, it can warn the driver through the steering wheel, instrument cluster or other alerts. Some vehicles may also apply a small steering correction.
Turn signals, road markings and vehicle speed are considered when determining whether a lane departure is intentional.
Lane Change Warning with Active Steering Intervention
Lane change warning helps detect vehicles in adjacent lanes or approaching from behind.
If the driver attempts to move into an occupied lane, the system may issue a warning. On compatible BMW models, it may also provide steering intervention to discourage the lane change.
Drivers should always check mirrors and blind spots manually before changing lanes.
2. Vehicle Guidance Systems
Vehicle guidance systems support longitudinal control, steering and lane following. These features are especially useful on motorways, highways and during long-distance driving.
Active Cruise Control
BMW Active Cruise Control, commonly known as ACC, maintains a selected speed while also adjusting the distance to vehicles ahead.
If traffic slows down, the system can reduce speed. When the road clears, it may accelerate again to the selected speed, depending on the system settings and traffic conditions.
ACC is helpful in motorway traffic, but the driver must continue watching the road. Sudden stops, motorcycles, cut-in vehicles and stationary objects may not always be detected correctly.
Traffic Light Recognition
Traffic light recognition helps identify traffic signals ahead.
The system may display information about a detected red, yellow or green light and can support the driver when approaching an intersection. Availability and operation depend on the country, navigation data, camera system and vehicle software.
It should be treated as an information feature rather than permission to ignore the traffic signal.
Cruise Control with Braking Function
BMW cruise control with braking function maintains a set speed and can apply braking when travelling downhill or when necessary to preserve the selected speed.
Unlike Active Cruise Control, standard cruise control may not maintain a set distance from vehicles ahead unless the vehicle includes the required radar and assistance equipment.
Steering and Lane Control Assistant
This system supports the driver by helping maintain the BMW’s position in its lane.
On compatible vehicles, the system can make continuous steering adjustments while the driver keeps their hands on the steering wheel. It may work alongside Active Cruise Control to provide support in motorway traffic.
The driver remains responsible for steering and must be ready to take over immediately.
Speed Limit Assistance
Speed limit assistance uses information from cameras, navigation data and traffic sign recognition to identify the current speed limit.
Depending on the BMW configuration, the driver may be able to accept a suggested speed limit or adjust the cruise control setting accordingly.
Speed limit information may be incorrect when signs are blocked, damaged, temporary or difficult to read.
Speed Limiter
A speed limiter allows the driver to set a maximum speed that the vehicle should not exceed under normal acceleration.
This can be useful in urban areas, roadworks and locations with strict speed limits. The driver can normally override the limiter when necessary by pressing the accelerator firmly, depending on the vehicle settings.
Lane Change Assistant
Lane Change Assistant supports a planned lane change on suitable roads.
When activated, the BMW checks the surrounding traffic and may steer the vehicle into the neighbouring lane if the conditions are safe. The system may require clear lane markings, a suitable road type and sufficient space around the vehicle.
The driver must continue monitoring traffic throughout the manoeuvre.
3. Parking and Manoeuvring Systems
BMW parking systems are designed to make low-speed manoeuvres easier. They can help identify parking spaces, monitor obstacles and, on selected models, control the steering or complete parts of the parking process.
Active PDC
Active Park Distance Control uses ultrasonic sensors and other vehicle information to monitor nearby obstacles.
The system can provide visual and acoustic warnings as the BMW approaches a vehicle, wall, kerb or other object. Some versions may also apply the brakes if a collision is considered likely during a parking manoeuvre.
Park Distance Control
Park Distance Control, or PDC, is one of the most familiar BMW parking features.
Sensors located at the front and rear of the vehicle detect nearby objects. The closer the BMW gets to an obstacle, the faster the warning tones may become.
PDC is useful, but sensors can be affected by dirt, snow, ice, heavy rain or objects that are too low or narrow to detect reliably.
Parking Assistant
BMW Parking Assistant helps the driver find suitable parallel or perpendicular parking spaces.
Once a suitable space is detected, the system can control the steering while the driver manages the accelerator, brake and gear selection, depending on the vehicle configuration.
The driver must remain attentive and be prepared to stop the vehicle at any moment.
Parking Assistant Plus
Parking Assistant Plus provides a more advanced parking experience on vehicles fitted with additional cameras and sensors.
Possible functions include:
- Automated steering during parking
- Top-view and 3D vehicle camera views
- Improved obstacle detection
- Support for parallel and perpendicular spaces
- Detailed visual guidance around the vehicle
The exact features depend on the installed BMW option package.
Rear Cross-Traffic Warning
Rear cross-traffic warning monitors traffic approaching from the sides while the BMW is reversing.

Some versions may also apply emergency braking at low speeds.
Front Cross-Traffic Warning

Reversing Assistant
BMW Reversing Assistant can remember a recent route driven forward and then steer the vehicle back along the same path while reversing.
This can be helpful in narrow driveways, underground car parks or tight access roads. The driver still needs to monitor the surroundings and control the vehicle according to the system instructions.
4. Warning Systems
Warning systems alert the driver to potential danger but do not always actively steer or brake the vehicle.
Wrong-Way Warning
Wrong-way warning helps identify situations where the BMW may be entering a road in the incorrect direction.
The system can use navigation information and traffic sign data to detect potential entry onto an exit ramp, one-way road or motorway slip road.
It is an important safety feature, particularly at night or in unfamiliar areas.
Rear-End Collision Warning
Rear-end collision warning alerts the driver when the BMW is approaching another vehicle or object too quickly.
The warning may appear in the instrument cluster, head-up display or central screen. Acoustic alerts may also be used.
The system’s purpose is to give the driver more time to react.
Rear Cross-Traffic Warning

Why BMW Driver Assistance Features May Differ
Not every BMW has the same driver assistance functions. Differences may be caused by:
- Model and body style
- Production date
- Country-specific regulations
- Optional equipment
- Camera and radar hardware

- Retrofit or coding changes
For this reason, a feature listed in technical documentation may not be available on every vehicle in the S18A, S18C or S18T series.
BMW coding and programming can sometimes activate or configure functions that the vehicle already supports. However, software coding cannot replace missing radar sensors, cameras, control units or safety hardware.
Incorrect coding may also create warning messages, communication faults or system limitations. Any programming work should be carried out carefully with suitable diagnostic equipment and a stable power supply.
