BMW B38, B46, B48 & B58 VANOS I-Level Errors: Why Your Engine Runs Rough and How to Fix It for Good

If your B38, B46, B48 or B58 has started acting up with a rough idle, random jerking, or that annoying emissions warning light, you’re probably staring at a handful of VANOS-related fault codes right now. I see this exact problem almost every week in the shop, especially on cars produced up to 14 March 2018.

The good news? In the huge majority of these cases you do not need new VANOS solenoids, a new chain, or any expensive hardware. BMW released a simple I-level (software) update that permanently fixes it.

Let’s break it down like we’re standing next to the car with a laptop open.

Which Cars and Engines Are Affected?

This hits DME8 control units on these chassis:

F20, F21, F22, F23, F30, F31, F32, F33, F34, F35, F36, G01, G11, G12, G30, G31, G32, G38

Engines: B46O, B48M, B48O, B58M, XB1H

And the smaller cars:

F39, F45, F46, F48, F55, F56, F57 with B38B, B38C, B48C, B48D

Production cut-off is clear: vehicles built up to 14.03.2018.

Affected I-stages are mainly 17-07-5xx and 17-11-5xx.

If your car is newer than that date and already on a later I-level, this particular bulletin usually doesn’t apply.

Classic Symptoms You’ll Notice

  • Engine shakes or runs rough at idle (especially when warm)
  • Noticeable jerking or hesitation under light throttle
  • Emissions / check-engine light comes on
  • Sometimes cold-start issues that disappear after a few minutes
  • In worse cases the car feels like it’s “hunting” for the right cam timing

None of these feel catastrophic at first, but left alone they get worse and can eventually trigger limp mode or fail an emissions test.

The Exact Fault Codes Stored in the DME

You’ll almost always find one or more of these:

Intake side

130E20 – Intake camshaft: Angular offset to crankshaft outside tolerance

130104 – VANOS, Intake: Control error, camshaft jammed

130715 – VANOS, Intake: Control error, camshaft jammed

130108 – VANOS, Intake: Control error, position not reached

130713 – VANOS, Intake: Control error, position not reached

13070B – VANOS, intake, cold start: not adjustable

130709 – VANOS, Intake, Cold Start: Position not reached

Exhaust side

130F20 – Exhaust camshaft: Angular offset to crankshaft outside tolerance

130308 – VANOS, Outlet: Control error, position not reached

130714 – VANOS, Outlet: Control error, position not reached

130304 – VANOS, exhaust: control error, camshaft jammed

130716 – VANOS, exhaust: control error, camshaft jammed

13070C – VANOS, exhaust, cold start: not adjustable

13070A – VANOS, exhaust, cold start: Position not reached

These codes all point to the same root cause: the DME’s control strategy for the VANOS units was a bit too aggressive or poorly calibrated in those early I-levels. The mechanical VANOS units themselves are usually perfectly fine.

The Official (and Best) Remedy

BMW’s fix is straightforward:

Have the vehicle updated to the latest I-level.

That’s it. No parts in 90 %+ of cases.

A proper dealer-level or high-end aftermarket programming session flashes the DME (and sometimes related modules) to a corrected calibration. Once the new software is in, the angular-offset calculations and cold-start VANOS routines behave correctly. The rough idle disappears, the jerking stops, and the light stays off.

I’ve done dozens of these updates. Cars that came in shaking like a paint mixer leave the shop idling like a sewing machine.

Why You Shouldn’t Just Clear the Codes

Clearing the faults without the update is a waste of time. They come straight back — sometimes within one drive cycle. The software bug is still there.

Also avoid the common trap of throwing new VANOS solenoids at it first. Test the solenoids if you want (resistance and activation), but in this specific I-level issue they almost always test good. Save your money and do the update.

How to Get the Update Done Right

You have three realistic options:

  1. BMW dealer – most expensive, but they have the official tools and will do it under any remaining warranty or goodwill.
  2. Independent specialist with ISTA/P or equivalent – usually half the price and just as effective if they know what they’re doing.
  3. Do it yourself if you already own the right interface and software (ENET cable + proper programming tools).

Quick Checklist Before You Program

  • Battery maintainer connected (very important)
  • Latest ISTA data or equivalent
  • Note your current I-level (you can read it in the control-unit tree)
  • After the update, clear adaptations and do a short test drive so the DME can re-learn
  • Recheck for codes — they should be gone and stay gone

Real Talk From the Workshop

I’ve had F30 340i (B58), F22 230i (B48), and even MINI Clubman (B48) owners come in convinced they needed a full timing-chain job because of the “camshaft jammed” wording. After the I-level update they were shocked how simple it was. One guy had already bought $800 worth of solenoids on Amazon — we returned them unused.

These engines are solid when the software is right. The B58 in particular is a legend once it’s happy.
