BMW Adaptive LED Coding: Fix Speed Limits & Unlock Real Night Vision

If you’ve got a BMW with Adaptive LEDs, you already know they’re pretty damn good straight from the factory. But “pretty good” isn’t good enough when you’re blasting down a dark mountain road or crawling through city streets at night. I got tired of the stock settings kicking in too late or cutting out too early, so I rolled up my sleeves and coded a few changes.

This post is everything I learned the hard way — how the lights actually work, what each mode does, and the exact coding I used to make them behave the way I want. No fancy talk, just real info from someone who drives these cars every day.

How BMW Adaptive LEDs Actually Work

BMW’s Adaptive LED system doesn’t just throw light forward. It changes the light pattern based on speed, road type, and what’s happening around you. There are four main light modes:

  1. City light distribution
  2. Country road light distribution (with oncoming traffic masked)
  3. Country road light distribution (normal)
  4. Motorway light distribution (basically full high beam range)

Plus fog light mode and the glare-free high beam assistant.

City Light Distribution

In town the system uses a shorter, wider beam. The left headlight tilts about 7° outward and 0.7° down. This lights up the left side of the road better at low speeds (up to about 50 km/h). Street lights already handle the distance, so the car focuses on width instead of range. Super useful in tight city streets or residential areas.

Country Road Light Distribution

This is the default low-beam pattern. It gives good light on the edges of the road and solid range. The cut-off line rises on the outer sides so you see traffic signs and obstacles earlier, but the middle stays lower so you don’t blind oncoming cars.

The system switches to this from city mode above roughly 45–50 km/h and drops back below 40 km/h. If anything goes wrong with the adaptive system, it falls back to this safe country-road setting.

Motorway Light Distribution

Once you’re cooking on the highway the lights open up. Range increases a lot. The left headlight tilts about 3.5° left and 0.25° down, while the right one points slightly upward (around 0.2°).

It kicks in when you stay above 140 km/h, or after 30 seconds between 90–110 km/h and then going over 140. When you slow down it gradually drops back: 110 → 100 → 90 → 80 km/h. Below 80 km/h you’re back in country-road mode.

Fog Light Distribution

Turn the fog lights on and the left headlight swings out more (about 4.5° left and 0.7° down up to 70 km/h, then 3.5° above that). It works with city or country modes. Hit the high beams while fog lights are on and everything resets to the basic country-road setting.

Glare-Free High Beam Assistant – The Real Magic

This is the best part. The system uses the KAFAS camera (or the interior mirror camera) to spot cars ahead or oncoming. It then moves a little shutter inside the headlight to mask just those vehicles so you keep most of your high-beam light without blinding anyone.

It detects oncoming traffic from up to 1000 meters and cars ahead from about 400 meters. Works above 40 km/h and shuts off below 30 km/h from the factory. You can always override it with the stalk.

It combines dynamic headlight range control, automatic lights, variable light distribution, and adaptive cornering lights. The headlights physically swivel left/right and up/down for corners and pitch changes when you brake or accelerate. Two height sensors (front and rear axle) feed the ICM, which talks to the FRM/FEM/BDC.

My Coding Changes – What I Actually Did

I’m really happy with the Adaptive LEDs overall. I only changed a couple of things that bugged me on the roads I drive.

I spend a lot of time on narrow mountain roads. The factory high-beam assist turning on at 40 km/h and off at 30 km/h felt too high. I kept getting the system kicking in and out on twisty bits.

So I coded it lower:

  • Activates at 30 km/h
  • Deactivates at 25 km/h

Here’s exactly where:

Kafas → 3050 FLA Coding → Speed Switching High Beams On

Stock hex is 28 (that’s 40 km/h). Change it to 1E for 30 km/h.

Kafas → 3050 FLA Coding → Speed Switching High Beams Off

Stock is 1E (30 km/h). Change to 19 for 25 km/h.

I also softened the tunnel glare protection:

Stock activates above 70 km/h and deactivates below 65. I set activation to 60 km/h and deactivation to 50 km/h. Much smoother on the roads I use.

Other Useful Light Stuff You Should Know

Parking lights

Light switch to position 1. You’ll get a beep and a check-control message when you open the driver’s door. Don’t leave them on or you’ll kill the battery.

Headlights (dipped)

Switch to position 2. When you kill the engine the parking lights stay on until you open the driver’s door.

Position A (Auto)

Lights come on based on the rain/light sensor. FRM/FEM/BDC handles it. If the sensor dies, the system turns the lights on anyway as a safety net. They can stay on after you switch off terminal 15 until you open the door or lock the car.

Sometimes they turn on a bit late when you enter a tunnel or tree-lined road — that’s normal. Just flip the switch manually if you need them sooner.

High beam & flasher

Needs terminal 15 + headlights on + stalk or high-beam assist. Pull the stalk for the flasher anytime.

Dynamic headlight range control

Keeps the beam level when you accelerate or brake so you don’t dazzle people.

Adaptive cornering lights

Optional but required for full glare-free high beam. Headlights swivel into the turn. Super quick reaction and has a backup emergency mode.

Variable light distribution is European only — not on US cars.

Quick Tips If You’re Coding This Yourself

  • Always back up your original coding first.
  • Use a solid cable and good software (I run everything through proper tools).
  • Double-check hex values — one wrong digit and things get weird.
  • After coding, do a few drive cycles so the modules settle.
  • If something feels off, the system usually falls back to the safe country-road pattern.
