The BMW 6WB digital instrument cluster already gives the cabin a modern look, but coding can unlock even more useful display options. Depending on the BMW model, software version and installed equipment, drivers may activate digital speed, a compass, engine power information, needle magnification and Sport+ shift lights.
These settings are popular with BMW owners who want a sharper, more performance-focused dashboard without replacing the original instrument cluster.
Useful BMW 6WB Coding Options
Digital speedometer above the needle
The DIGITAL_TACHO_ENABLE setting can display the vehicle speed digitally above the speedometer needle.
For the speed unit, use:
km/h_kmh
This is helpful when you want to read your exact speed quickly, especially in busy traffic or on unfamiliar roads.
Compass display in the BC menu
The KOMPASS_GRAPH_ENABLE option activates a compass in the lower center area of the onboard computer display.
KOMPASS_GRAPH_ENABLE is active
It is a small feature, but it can be useful during road trips, outdoor driving and navigation when you want a quick direction reference.
Engine power display
The MOTORLEISTUNG_ENABLE setting is designed to show engine power at the bottom of the tachometer.
MOTORLEISTUNG_ENABLE
This function does not work on every BMW configuration. Its operation may depend on the engine, instrument cluster software and vehicle integration.
Needle magnification
BMW’s digital cluster can also offer a magnifying-glass effect around the speedometer and tachometer needles.
LUPE_DZM_ENABLE LUPE_TACHO_ENABLE KI_PIA_LUPENENABL
The enlarged needle area makes the display easier to read while giving the dashboard a more dynamic, high-tech appearance.
Blank line in the onboard computer
The BC_LEERZEILE setting can add a blank line within the BC display.
BC_LEERZEILE
This is mainly a visual customization. It can make the information layout feel cleaner, particularly for drivers who prefer a less crowded dashboard.
High-speed digital display and HUD
Some BMW owners try to activate a speed display beyond 263 km/h in digital mode and the head-up display using:
KI_PIA_M_SPORT_DIGI_TACHO HUD_PIA_M_SPORT
This feature may not work on every vehicle. In many cases, it only applies to digital mode, while the analog-style scale remains limited to 260 km/h.
Sport+ shift light
The SHIFT_LIGHTS_ENABLE setting can activate a shift-light effect in Sport+ mode.
SHIFT_LIGHTS_ENABLE
When supported, the shift light gives the driver a clearer visual indication during hard acceleration and spirited driving.
Important Compatibility Notes
BMW coding options are not universal. The result can vary according to the vehicle model, production year, instrument cluster version, software integration and available equipment.
Before changing any settings:
- Save the original coding data.
- Use a reliable BMW coding tool.
- Keep the vehicle battery properly charged.
- Change one setting at a time.
- Avoid coding while other vehicle systems are being updated.
- Restore the original values if a display behaves incorrectly.
Some features may appear in the coding menu but remain inactive because the vehicle does not support the required hardware or software. A professional BMW coding specialist can confirm compatibility before making changes.
